Vestax VCM-600 MIDI ableton controller NAMM 2008

Last up from Vestax is another new MIDI controller. Again, I saw this as a drawing at PLASA but the reality looks a whole lot better. Obviously not aimed right at the DJ fold, hence the lack of jog wheel, this knob and button fest is primarily aimed at Ableton users, although being MIDI means you can plumb all manner of software into it.

This is the all too brief PR:
The VCM-600 offers wonderful performance to DJs who mix with digital music media and computer based systems and has excellent compatibility with Ableton LIVE 6 & 7.

Yep that's it. but I do have a few more pictures from the NAMM show floor.

And here is a video of their gear on the floor...

I guess they didn't understand that you shouldn't turn your camera sideways when recording video. I guess we are supposed to just turn our heads to compensate. =)

So close Vestax...so so close. For it to really be fully functional, they really should include a bank of about 6 starts per channel. Using scrolling in Ableton can be a pain if you want to quick trigger samples if you're trying to reconstruct an entire song based on sampling alone. I'd also add a bank of dedicated scene triggers so you can line up specific samples in a scene and just trigger them all at the same time. Other than that, so close, but no sale.

This controller has loads of buttons per channel, why not assign the 5 buttons in a line (on the LHS of each channel strip) as starts? I've never used Mute/Solo/Rec in a live performance and I don't find much use for CF-A/CF-B, either... You don't have to set it up so that they do exactly what vestax have labelled them. If you need the other functions, they're almost certainly secondary so you could set them up as a shift-function using Bomes.

As for the scene stuff, again I don't find myself using this much. However, you could map it to the bank of blue buttons on the right (admittedly they aren't in a vertical line)?

Vestax have gone way further to producing a "perfect" Ableton controller than anything released so far. Would you rather have fun with something now or wait another 1-2 years for someone (possibly) to do better?

Orge,

I do basically use all of those buttons with the exception of rarely using the record. I wouldn't use the upper hi/mid/low cut buttons assigned to those particular functions, but they would still be used for pre A/B send effects. But, dedicated mute, solo, cfa/b, and stop buttons for my work at least are pretty darn crucial. I already use Bome right now. I'd just really like to see a line of dedicated starts for quickly switching samples. I don't just want to use the board for live DJing, but also for production work.

It's lacking a "cue" button per channel too. Seems a bit odd to leave that out, as well as a few clip launch buttons. Maybe we should pester Vestax before it goes into full production smile.gif

I wouldn't mind an integrated audio interface with some pro connections on the back. And maybe even an audio input with bpm detection (like the Xone 2D has) for syncing up to real decks.

Has everyone failed to notice that it's a midi controller based around the vestax Fader Board, or is it just assumed that everyone already knows this?

In Live the solo button can be switched into the headphone cue button. This with a padkontrol or monome would be a great set up!

Doc Lee,

I agree with you that in an ideal world it would have a bank of clip launches. It's possible that there may still be time to influence the design. I suggest you email info@vestax.com.

There is actually an absent feature which is even more concerning - apparently, not a single continuous encoder??

Whilst I was hoping this would be a one-box solution, it appears I would almost certainly need to keep my 1D.
