Looky what Santa lent me...
Looky what Santa lent me...
Posted by Gizmo on December 21, 2005 :

Just for the holidays mind, but Santa dropped off a shiny black Vestax PMC-08Pro for me to get to know, love, review and ultimately steal. It's not perfect mind you - it's been backwards and forwards between Japan and the UK a little and has seen more than it's fair share of repair work in it's short existence. But despite it's condition being somewhere between prototype and final production model, it'll be getting the usual thorough gynecological once-over and my musings/ramblings posted in the new year before I allegedly send it back. :d:

PDF Spec.

Having tried to set it up @ DJ's for Life & had a cut, the 08 looks phat, weighs a ton especially if you include the power pack and pretty complicated at 1st glance. Really liked the new fader too once I'd worked out how it all worked.

Everyone who used it particularly the panel in the last seminar, i.e. Rob Swift, D-Styles, Steve D, Supreme, Woody etc really liked it.

If it had a digital output, I think there would be little else to touch it.

Giz make sure you hurry up with the review as I'm hoping Andy will let us test drive it after you!!! (Yes I'm Craven!!!blink1.gif

Happy Xmas to the Skratchworx peeps btw. Looking forward to a whole year of madness in the new year Giz!!

You will see how simple but efficient is the control of the cut in time in Gyz's review. (well I'm anticipating on your review, but this is what us, robots, usually do ^_______^ [private joke mode])

On December 22, 2005, Mindset said this:
it's a very good looking mixer that's for sure, all the key features are there too.

what does the matrix assign thing do at the top? does that only send one channel to the reverses, the effects or the crosfader. or none of the above?

On December 22, 2005, Mindset said this:
just read the spec:

"The unique Matrix Assign system selects the sound source from INPUT 1 and INPUT 2 and assigns it to
both PGM channels. Play the same track on both channels and add effects to only one. A feature that makes
your play style creative and original, only capable on the 08."

On December 22, 2005, harry said this:
If I remember correctly, that feature is also present on the pmc-37 and the vestax Carl Cox signature mixer.

At a glance it looks like Vestax finally have a serious contender in the current "Scratch Mixer Wars - Manufacturers Title"! Now we can't finally forget that embarassingly overpriced 007 fiasco! Seriously though, providing this mixer is as good as suggested, combined with Vestax's marketing/street-cred/image that kept on selling their out-dated mixers, they really could dominate the scratch mixer scene like it's 1996/97 all over again!

On December 22, 2005, DJ RockWell said this:

"On 22.12.05, Soba commented...
Actually Vestax was first with those front panel brackets, on the 07-ISP"

The 07-pro isp had a front panel bracket that blocked all of the switches and rotaries. You couldn't even adjust the curve adjustment without braking your fingers.

I think it will come down to which brand gives the best customer support, sound quality and long lasting build.

Should be interesting.

Big-ups on the XLR output and USB connectivity (why not Firewire though?) Tthe inclusion of the built-in 24-bit/96kHz signal processor sounds tres tres bien.

Too bad I bought a Nuo3 (w/ Eternal)...although, I'm not really complaining.

For the cats who used the PMC, how would you compare it to the Eternal? (I've got 2nd Gen.) That is, if you've used which.......i'd assume you have.

Peace to all skratch-cats. Happy holidays & all that jazz.

We were lucky enough to have one on the Pedestrian/Skratchworx stand at DJ's4Life courtesy of Vestax (thnx A) and I have to echo NJ's comments above: build and sound quality excellent, cross fader a pleasure to use and fantastic mixer overall. This could be the mixer that finally persuades all those long term 07 users to upgrade. Please Mr.Vestax develop a digital coax/optical out module for the mixer then it would be perfect.

Happy Christmas to all who frequent sw_smilie.png !

"I dunno, it looks nice but all the mixers are starting to look the same to me."

That is why this mixer is also available in white....

Seriously, other than changing a colour how can a mixer be changed to look significantly different? The PMC-007 tried to change the stlying but was not successful. Ecler tried to change things a little with a mixer where the channel faders (up faders) were angled, but that also was not a great seller. Ergonimics dictacte the main layout, size etc, so what else could be done?

Whats the headroom/SN ratio/general sound quality like??

That's the most important question imo, I mean Vestax are hardly known for their amazing sound.

On December 24, 2005, Worzel said this:
"but i have a feeling it is not worth the digits it probably costs"

The cost is 699 (UK rrp), but whether it is worth this depends on your personal requirements....

"I mean Vestax are hardly known for their amazing sound"

Depends on which mixers you are talking about. The club install mixers are actually well known, and used, due to their sound quality. For scratch mixers they are more designed for performance and features. How important is sound quality in the bedrooms where most of this type of mixer are used?

Happy Christmas to all sw_smilie.png members.....especially to Giz and the team.

Season's Greetings from Vestax.

We wish you all a beautiful Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to come!
At a time like this, Santa's probably the busiest person in the World, but not busy enough for the 08s!

He's a little delayed with his current schedule, but he promises to get them to you early next year! (Feb)

For the ones who tried it and checked it out, you're very lucky...there are only a few out on tests...and a few in JPN.

Thank you
Gizmo, see you soon.

What's up, good talking to you guys the other day, Happy New Year. Request was approved, yo hit S.E.C with the vinyl! Been dry of nicknack for months now!

Enfoe, your 08 will be sent to you from the batch of the first line in production, hold in there.

CS-80, MsM,
Put the 08 up to test to any mixer out for sound quality, it was made to answer your needs. You want amazing, you've got it. In depth specs will be up online later this month.

Fader is not magnetic or has a tension control.
After testing, tension although a good feature, we wanted to make sure that the fader still felt like the fader you were familiar with, rather than having it always change after time and having to readjust due to loosening of tension. Wanted ours built tough to keep up with the cut control features as well.

Teeko, what's up. Big up to the Dollar Bin Quintet and Fouronefunk...

Happy New Year to everyone at Skratchworx and for supporting Vestax.

"How important is sound quality in the bedrooms where most of this type of mixer are used?"

I think if you want to make any sort of scratch music or take any samples from your turntables sound quality is of the utmost importance..this mixer with this sort of price tag will be for serious skratchers/producers who probably are gigging, making music etc. If your some hobby dj or a n00b buy yourself a stanton or something. 8)

This is a high end mixer, i want amazing sound quality and amazing features, not some half arsed mixer with alot of bells and whistles that cant even give you good sound. Hopefully this mixer will be the former.
