Review one and another appears...

Let me tell you a story - I got word about a dealer site boasting about a hot new mixer from Urei - the 1601E - dropping the sampler and putting FX in it's place. So being the dutiful and respectful gear journo that I am, I paid the common courtesy of dropping a line to Urei and asking "is this right?". "Ooooh lordy no not at all - it's a typo" was the reply. Utterly sceptical, I let it lie. But looky here... I can only guess that Urei liked the idea and designed and made this mixer in a matter of weeks. The Urei 1601E does exist and it's all over their site as well.

At first glance, it's just the same as the 1601/s but with the new effects unit. This is the specific blurb relating to the effects section:

Five preset effects (flange, cutter, filter, delay and pan) and 5 banks of 5 effects combinations (25 presets)
Automatic or manual (tap) effects bpm synchronisation
X-Y Modulation Controls
Bpm-fx cross-fader for wet/dry balance
Three-band isolator for bandpass in effects channel
Selectable effects speed
Digital, tape and vintage delay types
Triangle, rise and fall LFO wave-forms
Bpm lock indicator

Rather nice if you ask me, especially in these times of needing something a little different. Now if you could just add the sampler into the right hand side and you'd have a killer mixer to die for. Are you listening Mr Morrisey?

And here's a nice little accident - I hit the wrong button in Photoshop and came up with the following inverse colour image. Is it me, or does it look better? NOTE: this is not a real product - just a happy accident!

I agree, there is something about that reverse that's appealing. Even that nasty blue.

Looks good!
I'm not sure about the Urei's in particular, but Exciters in general do something quite different to EQ. They add additional harmonics to the signal as opposed to simply boosting a frequency, usually with quite pleasing results.

when i read the 1601s review (which was gold by the way lads) i was a tad sceptical of a hi-end digital based sound quality i still have issues with (and will until i hear one), but fuck me if it dosent make versatile piece of kit. urei now having the "backbone" being the 1601(whatever) can come up with countless numbers of mods, add on packs or whatever you can think of, at im sure a fraction of the cost to do the same things in solid state.

this new version is but one example of what could be done...

I think this will go through the roof once the pro x fader can be fit in!!

Yeah, for only $900 plus another $100 for a crossfader. Honestly they sould add a power switch. It most certainly has the room for it inside the beast.

Hey that makes me think this would be a good model for the supmeme mod chalenge of putting sratch live and a computer inside a mixer with an attachable monitor. I was thinking it would be dope if the moniter folded down over the face of the mixer and had a clasp like a laptop. It would be the most expensive dust cover mod ever.

I, personally, really like how this bad boy looks... I would buy two.... if it had, either an infinium fader, or if the pro x fit...

The sound is great on the 1601x. Really, i've had the 1601s for a while ( in for repair) but every mix i made with that thing is awesome.

Yeah - I heard this weekend that Urei may have revisited their pricing.

On December 11, 2005, rall said this:
quite resonable. sure they seem to be great mixers, but with those faders aimed at the skratch-market they didnt stand much chance over 700.

But seriously, how do you turn it on and off! wacko.gif

It is possible to put a ProX in the Urei.In fact, I just did it (and it works fine so far), even though I thought it would not be possible due to the different resistance.I can take pics if you guys want em.

On December 17, 2005, rall said this:
sounds good Sparks. Was it hard to do it or could a non-technical fool like myself do it?

On December 18, 2005, Sparks said this:
Well,it definately ain't plug 'n'play. It needs a lil mod, which is basically understanding which of the fader's pins you need to use. It's the same concept as the monoraul faders in the older Ecler and Rane mixers. I used the 'PCV to Ecler mod' that was posted ages ago on asisphonics as my main inspiration. Basically, all contact faders are the same, so a sketch, some thinking and luck is all you need.I'll take some pics using my mobile phone tomorrow if you're interested.

Thanks Sparks, ill probebly look into this mixer now.

Not bragging but i was priveleged enough to play with the prototypes of the 1601s, i remember it orginally had chrome pots and looked a lot better than the grey ringed ones, and the red was less predomninent but man does it look sweet in silver.......the 1601s is a top mixer, especially now soundcraft revised the pricing well worth the 399

Has anyone used the urei 1601e, how does it compare with the pricey pioneer djm 909?
