1 week to go...
1 week to go...
Posted by Gizmo on December 3, 2005 :

Next Friday, Birmingham UK (not Alabama) will see a convergence of DJ skills never seen before in the UK. The DJs For Life conference and event kick off with several sessions about the hottest topics and an evening of awesome showcases. For some ker-azy reason I volunteered for 2 sessions, and somehow ended up hosting 3. So get your arses over to the DJs For Life site and order loads of tickets!

I just got details through of the sessions I'll be hosting:

Friday 9th December – 11.45 – 12.45

Turntable, Laptop, CD player, Ipod – new formats and DJing

Panel/demo session featuring Jazzy Jay, Tigerstyle, DJ Skully and DJ 2Tall
Chaired by Gizmo (Skratchworx)

A session looking at new DJing formats, including CD decks and MP3 formats. What are the advantages? What are the drawbacks? Why do the panellists like or dislike a particular format? Are you still a turntablist if you only scratch on CDJs or MP3s?

Friday 9th December – 3.30 -4.30

Use of effects units, loop pedals and other things with knobs and switches

Panel session/masterclass with D-Styles, DJ Woody, DJ Moyma, Dego and Gizmo (chairing)

This session will look at why and how DJs use other devices with their standard set-up. Questions raised might include: Do you use them? Is this just a gimmick? Do people know you’re using them? Is that important?

Saturday 10th December – 1.00 – 2.00

The equipment surgery – what’s best, what’s new and what’s wack

Panel session with Gizmo (chairing), DJ Blakey, 2Tall, DJ Skully

This session will discuss, demonstrate, test and compare new and established equipment. The session should look at what equipment the individual panellists prefer to use and why, what they look for in new equipment and what they’d like to see developed. The session will also give the panellists the opportunity to try out some new equipment and give their verdict.

And that's just the ones I'm doing. There's 2 days of sessions covering all sorts of subjects - more details at the DJs For Life site.

sw_smilie.png will also be sharing a stand with Pedestrian and Spin Science where we'll have a few bits of gear to play with and possibly a few bargains from the shop as well in time for Christmas.

So why wait? Crack out the credit card and get some tickets bought at the DJs For Life site. Better still, you can ring the credit card hotline - 08707 544445. See you there! 8)

Why should the rest of the country have to travel all the way down to London? Birmingham is very central for the whole country.

errr...is it?? So, there are no train lines, major motorway networks or airports anywhere near birmingham then right? Please. Look at the lineup. Fortunately I don't, but if I had to I would crawl over hot coals right up the M1 to get there. There are people coming from cornwall, scotland and even overseas who aren't complaining....

Abottwa - cheap b&bs - My personal recommendation, if you can get in, is the hotel formule1. It's £25 a night and it's a nice clean hotel (albeit basic) real close to the club...check www.hotelformule1.com for the details. If that's no go then check out www.birmingham.org.uk for lists and lists of places to stay... And if you still can't get anything sorted then come check me on the Friday morning and I'll find somewhere for you. Cos we're nice like that.

Agreed, there's so many good things going on in cities outside the capital that are slept on. London rocks but getting there can be an expensive and time consuming pain in the arse compared to everywhere else.

Really looking 4wd to hooking up with everyone at the event and absorbing all the great things going on.
