While last year's name seemed to be all about DJ orientated MIDI controllers, there appears to be more than a hint of more producer based controllers being assimilated by the DJ scene. Button bashing is clearly gaining favour with DJs, so it comes as no surprise that Native Instruments have leapt aboard the next digital gravy train, albeit in the first class carriage. MASCHINE is, as you might expect, a serious lump of goodness.

I have a world of photos, but skratchworker Peter discovered the hard way that when recording a demo, pressing the record button FIRST is kind of important, so this time there's no footage. NI however have provided a ridiculous number of demo videos of their own on the MASCHINE site.

SO is this thing more a kin to like a Korg Electribe groove machine and a roland groove machine can it be used similarly like an MPC (fil in the blank) or a Roland MV-8000 ? I am confused a by what this thing can do, i have not seen the videos yet though.

It's a MIDI controller; so by definition you can control any midi-compatible software or vst plugin you want. This unit is a mix of hardware and software unit. Like, an MPC that you could run on your computer to edit your samples and sequences, and while on the road can be used on its own via memory. So it looks pretty versatile, and also you get this sound library bundled with the software that looks gigantic so you can start to play right away without any messing around.

i know its a midi controller, i meant does it work with its software as a virtual MPC or more like a roland or Korg groove box.

Wrong, it is more than a midi controller, it is some sample drummachine, which can be used to control a pc software but it can also work standalone!

I looked a little more at the features and the hardware. This one is not stand alone as standalone without a pc like an mpc would. It can be used as a stand alone software & hardware combo, but it still requires a pc / mac. This was a huge missunderstanding from my side, sorry for that. I'm a little disappointed now ...

Yeah me too, I tought that you could use it on its own via onboard or sd memory... Looks like a great piece of software but I'm not gonna either run 2 laptops for a set or switch softwares on the same maSchine...*cough*
