End of an era - the skratchmac is dead
End of an era - the skratchmac is dead
Posted by Gizmo on October 24, 2008 :

Skratchworx HQ has hit a majorly serious problem. A power cut and subsequent power surge when it restarted has left the elderly but previously solid and stable skratchmac dead. I get a power light on the adaptor and the battery charges, but outside of that it's an ex-mac - it has ceased to be.

As a former Mac techy, I've exhausted my knowledge in a bid to resuscitate it. So here's my problem - all my data is probably safely stored on the aforementioned dead Powerbook, but it does rather cripple my steez somewhat. This of course means that email might not be responded to as quickly, and importantly BPM Battle footage won't be posted until the new skratchmac II is in place.

About the replacement - I've waited long enough to replace the elder statesman Powerbook G4 so I figure I should do it right with a spanking new MacBook Pro. The huge problem is that they don't seem to be in the UK for another 7 days. So in that time, skratchworx will be running on impulse power rather than at Warp 12 on a borrowed PC so please bear with me.

Now if anyone can hook me up with a great deal on a new MacBook Pro or wants to trade ad space, photography or writing skills then please let me know. This has hit me about 3 months early and will leave me going through bins for food. unsure.gif

A sad day for Skratchworx! :'( Hopefully you will manage to sort things out some way. Weren't you running it through an APC or a surge protector? External backup? If it is an old Powerbook then it should house a 2.5" hard drive with a standard ATA/IDE connection. You should be able to plug it into any Powermac G4 with an IDE cable and recover the files manually.

Sorry to hear it, Giz. Personally, I'm quite underwhelmed with the new macs for the lack of a firewire port. This means that TraktorScratch certified mixers are a no-go! Personally, I'd go to the apple web store and pick up one of the refurb'ed last-gen macbook pro's. A few ducats less $$$ for a machine that's still very *very* nice and is actually USEFUL for audio work. For example, a 15" macbook pro with 2Gb of ram and a core2duo 2.4Ghz w/200Gb hard drive is $1349. Compare that to $1999 for the new mac that has 50Gb more hard drive space and the new case design.

I hope it all works out well for you. Also, you might want to put up a link to donate a few bucks via paypal so your loyal readers can chip in to help out.

@qfourtwenty

The macbook pros have Firewire 800 which is backward compatible to Firewire 400 with an adapter. Shouldn't be a big problem. Plus Firewire 400 was dying other than a small percentage of audio and video usages. Apple is just moving people forward onto a better standard. Do you expect them to still support parallel port too, how about RS-232?

Firstly, thanks for the very unexpected contributions to the skratchworx development fund. I really am truly touched and extremely honoured and grateful. If anyone else feels the urge to give the skratchmac the send off it deserves and secure the future of skratchworx, there's a big green donation button in this story: http://www.djworx.com/skratchworx/news3/comments.php?id=1029

Phillip - thanks for the discount offer, but I need to buy in the UK. With the current exchange rate, despatch and customs charges, it's cheaper to buy in the UK. And of course, the lack of warranty is a worry as well.

Great news! Mrs Gizmo donned her best detective hat and got a brand new 2.4/2gb/200 15" Macbook Pro for 1099. Should be with me Monday. Can't turn my nose up at a 800 saving! I just need to get a 4gb RAM upgrade and an external 2.5" drive enclosure so I can get my old data off.

Having limped along with my Powerbook for so long, I'm quite sure that this new Mac will be utterly wonderful in comparison. So hopefully, normal service will be resumed on Tuesday.

But the MacBook Pro is a PC and Mac all in one. You owe me 250.

@djmorice

I thought that apple had removed the firewire port entirely from the whole line. If the macbook pro still has firewire 800, then I recant my statement. Oh, also, for RS232, HELL YES I need it. In fact, after a network port, this is one of the most useful ports on the computer for my needs. There is some stuff that the USB to Serial converter device just doesn't work properly (flashing firmwares on certain components, etc.) and it's *really* nice to just use a null modem cable to connect to the console of a box. Granted, my needs are a fair bit different from other people...

Update: the skratchmac's drive is now in an external 2.5" case plugged into this PC and all my data appears fine. So I should be able to reboot my new Mac from it and get back on with business on Monday and then migrate the data to the new Mac.

I'm about to put the skratchmac back together again without the drive. What's the betting that it wants to start up?

Update 2: skratchmac is officially dead. I can't see anything wrong internally, but it just sits there - dormant and in a better place. That better place will be eBay, if only to regain a few quid.

DM - I spent several years in Mac support so believe me when I say that there's nothing I haven't tried to being it back to life. It is dead and its replacement will be with me tomorrow. Regardless, I had to upgrade at some point so this unfortunate event simply forced the inevitable.

Im sure Mrs Giz would have been fine with you just buying a new mac. Your old mac "just happening to break" after the new macs get released? yeah.. right lol. Whatever you say :-)

Id saved for new macbook but no firewire on it. cant quite stretch to a pro as apparently my daughter needs to eat this year. To wait or buy a black mac book or something. arg. I cant decide. Enjoy your new pro.

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to boot your new Intel Mac from a PPC install on your (now) external drive.

Best thing to do is boot it normally, then use the migration assistant.

Good call Ian. It's been a long time since I wore a Mac support coat. I should've remembered. Still, it'll be fun to try won't it? Although the migration assistant was the next call anyway, along with reinstalling all apps as Intel rather than PPC or universal.

Just sat here waiting for the courier to arrive. Has to be here by 6 or I'm shouting down the phone at someone.
