Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Before I hit the BPM Show floor...
Posted by Gizmo on September 30, 2011

I have to admit to a certain amount of schoolgirl giddiness as I set off towards the west country for The BPM Show. Granted, my inbox has been populated with secret sauce, skype has been somewhat busy with all sorts of banter, as well as semi-deep throat phone calls spilling beans that may or may not have been authorised. But this year has been different to others - the industry is definitely cautious about shooting their load too early.

BPM 2011: Numark N4 Controller
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2011
numark n4 serato DJ intro Virtual DJ LE 4 channel midi controller

You can pretty much depend on Numark to have some controller or other ready to roll at a big trade show, and BPM is no exception. The Numark N4 looks like a budget NS6, but this time however, it's ready to roll with Serato's new DJ Intro package as well as Virtual DJ LE.

BPM 2011: Pioneer Ergo Controller
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2011
pioneer ddj-ero-v ergo bpm 2011 midi controller

Oh what fun I had with this piece. Having received industry intelligence about this unit some time ago, I decided to have a little fun with Pioneer, and those in the know will have chuckled at my "ergo and concurrently" line in the original article and liberal use of "therefore" (latin innit). I do such things more than you're aware of to the amusement of a small group of said people in the know (I'll reveal another at BPM). But after a teaser and an almost unveiling video, the full thing is here - Pioneer present DDJ-ERGO-V.

BPM 2011: Introducing... Serato DJ Intro
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2011

I've lost count of how many people have literally begged for Serato Scratch Live to power controllers. Indeed, when ITCH came out and didn't look Serato-y enough, many were up in arms, that despite being fairly close, it just wasn't close enough for some. But things are changing, and Serato have decided that every DJ, no matter what the level should get a piece of the action. Enter Serato DJ Intro - essentially SSL LE for controllers.

BPM 2011: Vestax tease a 4 channel VCI-something
Posted by Gizmo on September 28, 2011
vesta VCI-600 VCI-800 4 channel controller BPM 2011

While the DJ world has been mercilessly ploughed through by the unstoppable 4 channel gravy train, Vestax have been pretty quiet in this respect. Granted, the scene defining VCI-100's sequel offered 4 deck control, but it still only had 2 real channels. So it comes as little surprise to see the above unit making an appearance at last. It seems the true 4 deck Vestax is about to be unleashed.

BPM 2011: The Reloop Experience
Posted by Gizmo on September 27, 2011
reloop bpm 2011

Day 2 of the BPM warm-up and Reloop would absolutely love it if you pop along to their stand to sample their many wares, as well as listen to the turntable stylings of DJ Angelo and Flip, as well as the lyrical dexterity of MC Icon. And there's a raffle too. Sounds like a wedding disco to me. But they certainly know how to afterparty if Musikmesse is anything to go by. blink1.gif

BPM 2011: A&H's "Special K" teaser
Posted by Gizmo on September 27, 2011

Allen & Heath are certainly giving us more than our fair share of teaser material this year. I would say that I pretty comprehensively tore apart yesterday's xone:db2 teaser video, but in the case of this "special K" teaser, I find my hands somewhat tied - as I do know what it is, and it would be quite unfair for me to spill beans of any sort.

BPM 2011: Xone:DB2 teaser
Posted by Gizmo on September 26, 2011

And so it begins. In 5 days time, the doors are flung open at The BPM Show 2011, and gear hungry DJ nerds gagging for a fix of gear pr0n will descend upon a large number of stands in a bid to lay hands upon the new shiny. And from what I can gather, there will be plenty of it to see as well. And in time honoured tradition, there's always a manufacturer ready to tease their latest whatever to get the masses twitching. Allen & Heath always like a bit of the teaser action, and have proffered forth a short clip by violently waving a camera over an expensive mixer, henceforth referred to as the DB2. But what is it exactly?

NEW: Pioneer DJM-250 mixer
Posted by Gizmo on September 21, 2011
pioneer djm-250 2 channel mixer filter

Not the Pioneer new product story you were hoping for, but this morning I woke up to a tweet about the all new entry level (yes you read right) DJM-250 mixer. It's a basic 2 channel affair, but with a heap of ins and outs, as well as offering filters per channel. And all for an uncharacteristic low price too.

UPDATE: US price and white images added.

OPINION: Is innovation always necessary?
Posted by Gizmo on September 15, 2011
innovation DJ CDJ 1200 technics

Standing back as I do to observe trends in the DJ scene, I have witnessed a growing impatience - a hunger for a constant stream of advanced new shiny. Indeed, with increasing regularity, internet commenters lambast manufacturers for a disappointing lack of innovation in whatever new box they unleash into the market. But do manufacturers really need to keep pushing that envelope with every single new release?

Vestax UK win 05 Pro IV

Because I'm a generous kind of guy, I do love to give stuff to people to make them happy. It makes me even happier when said stuff is large, shiny and belongs to someone else. So imagine just how happy I am that Vestax UK want me to give away one of their mixers in a social media domination quest. Ecstatically is the word.

Not a double post, but a not so gentle reminder that the Novation Digital DJ Tour started yesterday, and will be stopping in or at least close to your hood to show you all that is good and great in the world of digital DJing.

iMaschine - pocket based button bashing
Posted by Gizmo on September 6, 2011

Since the iOS revolution hit DJing, calls have been made upon the assorted software vendors to bring some sort of scaled down versions of their DJ products to the iPhone and iPad. But it's hard enough to cram your average DVS interface into a 13" laptop screen let alone one the size of a business card. So given the more suitable interface for such things, it should come as no surprise to see that NI's Maschine has been hacked into bite sized lumps and will soon be an iOS app. iMaschine is upon us.

NI's Maschine Mikro - same grunt in a smaller box
Posted by Gizmo on September 6, 2011
native instruments maschine mikro

There seems to be a trend in the digital DJ realm - bring out an all singing and dancing box that is probably bigger than people need. And then realise somewhere down the line that it's actually something smaller that people really really want. Kontrol S4 becomes kontrol S2, Pioneer DDJs become "The Thingy". And now NI's Maschine becomes Maschine Mikro - a slimmed down version of the just-a-bit-too-big-for-your-average-DJ-setup Maschine groove box. At least it wasn't called Maschine Nano.

Yet another Pioneer controller video
Posted by Gizmo on September 5, 2011

In what has to be the more bizarre product not-quite-launch I've ever witnessed, yet another video has surfaced of that new Pioneer Thingy. Brazenly displayed at the IFA Show in Berlin (consumer electronics which is a clue to the intended market), they showed off this new controller to anyone who wanted to see it, and Pioneer's Rik Parkinson seemed to have no problem switching to demo mode to give us just a little more info.

Pioneer's new controller - the teardown
Posted by Gizmo on September 2, 2011
Pioneer controller BPM 2011

So here it is - the new Pioneer... whatever it's called. Pioneer just outed it themselves on their Facebook page, ergo and concurrently I downloaded the full HD version and have spent a useful pre-breakfast 30 minutes tearing it apart frame by frame. And it does show, and importantly hide some useful detail.

Piklz play Fader Fest 2011 - This Saturday
Posted by Gizmo on September 1, 2011

In the world of music, there have been legendary groups whose light and shone and been extinguished before anyone was ready for that light to fade. And in the DJ world, that group was the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. But for one night only (this Saturday), 3 members of the Piklz are back together at the Thud Rumble Fader Fest 2011.

UPDATE: MixVibes Cross v1.6
Posted by Gizmo on September 1, 2011
mixvibes cross v1.6

It's all well and good having a ridiculous level of digital toys to chuck at your music, but if you just cannot find it properly, or fail to keep it in any kind of order, then you might as well give up any hope of being a digital DJ. It would be like having all your vinyl as white labels in white covers. Thus the ability to wrangle your audio collection into some sort of order is absolutely vital. And MixVibes realise this and have spent some serious time making Cross v1.6 even better than before.
