Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

PLASA 2006 - Vestax
Posted by Gizmo on September 30, 2006

It's been a quiet time of late for Vestax. Things have changed from a distribution point of view, but R&D has still continued. And fine tuning and tweaking continues on Vestax's oh so long awaited Controller One. We got play on a what is pretty much a finished model and saw the future of Vestax (but you can't so nuh).

PLASA 2006 - Westend DJ
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2006

Check out this happy smiling face - it's the face of Eitan Zilkha, the guy responsible for Westend DJ. And they had a stand - nothing unusual in that you might think but it's relatively unheard of for a dealer to take space at a trade show.

And it was quite a lot of space as well as they hosted the word record attempt for the most turntables being used at one time. Considering the logistics of such a thing at a show (it's often hard to find a spare plug for a laptop), Westend DJ, Ecler and Pioneer managed to pull it off eventually. We didn't stick around to see the outcome as it was running considerably late but big up Eitan and the Westend DJ crew for the show and the stand. QBert's Octagon aint got nothing on this.

PLASA 2006 - Ortofon
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2006

Aside from owning the DMC Finals, Ortofon put on quite a show this year. Normally, they don't grace the UK with a presence as such but in a continuing bid for global domination, they had a string of top DJ talent gracing the stand (that we managed to miss between meetings) as well as a handful of semi-naked females in the shape of a bevy of knob twiddling Playboy models.

PLASA 2006 - Ebsel
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2006

Ebsel had a nice spot at the show and a good stand. Sunday saw a constant stream of people stepping up to take turns on the turns. Roc Raida, 2Tall, Matman, Daredevil plus Animal Crackers from the US did the honours showing off Stanton's range, including the special edition Gong Battle SA-5. Footage was captured which I believe will be part of a forthcoming Skratchworx/Turntable Radio takeover of DJ Battle TV.

MixVibes Kodh demo - I give up video editing
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2006

Just when I think I'm getting the hang of this video editing lark, have my skratchworx TV movies scripted out and start writing my Cannes Film Festival award winner speech, along come those MixVibes people with another cracking demo flick, making me reconsider even pressing the record button ever again. Remember the Troubl one a little while back? That was all dark and moody but this one is very much lighter - full on white in fact. French champion Kodh brings the skills.

PLASA 2006 - MixVibes
Posted by Gizmo on September 29, 2006

The French software company continue to inflict their software onto unsuspecting lumps of hardware - this time, the Allen & Heath Xone:3D. It seems that no matter how hard it tries, MixVibes just seems to work with things although time will tell as to how well it will work. But just in case it doesn't work too well, MixVibes vinyl has gone Technicolor so at least things will look pretty if your set goes to pieces. Just kidding Eric/Patrick... :D

DJDecks Update
Posted by Gizmo on September 26, 2006
Digital DJ solutions are all the rage. Every kid with a laptop can become the next D-Styles or Fatboy Slim thanks to really clever people making things like SSL and Final Scratch. But even people without the huge resources of big companies are in on the act and offering good solutions at bargain basement prices - just like DJDecks. But don't let the prices fool you - when Deft reviewed DJdecks a year ago, it did pretty well against the players - and now v0.76 is out.

Sneaky peek - new QBert site
Posted by Gizmo on September 26, 2006

QBert's website should be the first place to go to check out what the almighty skratch VIP is up to. But for whatever reason, the site has been offline for some time now - but not for much longer. You can a taste of things to come from peeking behind the scenes of the all new DJ QBert website.

Breaktionary - now on CD
Posted by Gizmo on September 26, 2006

A little while back, Thud Rumble completed QBert's Breaktionary series with the 4th in the series being available on vinyl. But Thud aren't forgetting about the DJs who have embraced the digital age - Breaktionary is now available on double CD.

It's real - the MPC500
Posted by Gizmo on September 19, 2006

MPC - 3 simple letters that mean so much to the music industry. I doubt that there isn't a producer on this planet who hasn't used one of the wide range of Akai's all powerful sampling wonderboxes to make some "phat beats" or whatever you hip young things call good music these days. But the reality of actually owning an MPC has up until fairly recently - with the inroduction of the MPC-1000 - been in the realms of those with somewhat cavernous pockets. Until today.

Yes people it's real - Akai have finally announced the long rumoured MPC500 and it doesn't look like a PSP either, unlike the oh so hilarious Photochop image floating around the net. Now I'm not going to even try to bluff and sound like I have a clue what I'm talking about when it comes to MPCs. I know decks, mixers and all the other DJish stuff that we ramble on about in skratchworx but all this sampling/beat making malarkey is all new to me - which makes the MPC-500 ideal for me to dip my toe into this whole scene.

PLASA 2006 - Cortex
Posted by Gizmo on September 15, 2006
So it's no secret that GCI Technologies aka Gemini are having a resurgence right now. And taking up a fair amount of the Gemini stand were the new offerings from those new kids on the block, Cortex. The first entry level HDC-1000 is now available and the second larger and higher spec'd HDC-3000 took a step nearer completion. But of most interest was a prototype of the desktop HDTT-5000, something aimed much more at DJs of all styles and looking to take on the big boys at their own game.

PLASA 2006 Day 1 - Mackie
Posted by Gizmo on September 11, 2006
This years PLASA is up to date totally uneventful. I didn't expect it to be anything else to be honest. But one new product did surface in the shape of Mackie's brand spanking new d.4 - the quite logical and not at all rocket science 4 channel followup to the d.2. The d.4 is designed to work very closely with all major software apps but in particular Mackie are getting to do it's magic with MixVibes via firewire.

UPDATED:Official blurb added.

The Weekend starts here!
Posted by Gizmo on September 8, 2006

So today's the day - the start of the biggest weekend in the DJ scene for sometime. Tonight at Bar Rumba, it's Roc Raida's Gong Battle gathering together some of the finest skratch talent to battle it out for the European Gong Title. PLASA starts on Sunday where you'll all be able to lay your mits on all the skratchporn hardware we keep inflicting on your senses and my good friend at Ebsel have got some special action happening on their DJ Cafe stand. And on the same day, 2 days of DMC World Final action starts.

Posted by Gizmo on September 8, 2006
In a bizarre twist, someone here is picking the 2 winners of the PlusSTream DMC streaming comp. The entries are in and have been put at random into a numbered list. The first person to drop 2 numbers between 1 and 52 in a comment has picked the winners. I'm waiting....

3 years old and rising!
Posted by Gizmo on September 3, 2006

sw_smilie.png is 3 years old today! Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear skratchworx, happy birthday to me. It's been a real roller coaster ride of emotions, highs, lows but generally it's been worth every single second. And we're still only warming up... 8)
