Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Another year, another Pioneer teaser

Pioneer BPM 2011 controller tease teaser

I kicked around 2 titles for this post, "another week, another 2 channel controller" being the other as both are suitable. But it would appear that Pioneer (looking remarkably Numarkesque in style) are doing the whole teaser thing, with the original image appearing on their Facebook page, but first appeared under my nose via the good people at Gear Junkies. Now when I say tease, I say it in the loosest possible sense as it's rather obvious what it is.

Grandmaster Flash at BPM
Posted by Gizmo on August 26, 2011
grandmaster flash BPM show flash former

My undying support for and love of the BPM Show is well known. I've seen it grow from a fledgling DJ show at Donington Park to a highly influential world leader on a par with NAMM and Musikmesse for DJ specific content. And this year is no exception, with some hot new nextlevelness coming out (lips glued shut so don't even ask) and a roster of VIP DJs showing up. I'm especially giddy about one particular DJ coming along, as he was instrumental in me doing what I'm doing now. Grandmaster Flash will be doing a live set on the first day, and being the true gear geek that I am, I intend to get him to sign a piece of former nextlevelness that you may not have seen before - the Gemini Flash Former.

DMC Online Battle - the final 18
Posted by Gizmo on August 26, 2011

Battling is changing, and DMC finally bit the bullet and started an online variant of their hugely successful and scene defining turntablist competition. The difference here is that you could more or less use any technology you wanted to create your set. And after a lengthy period of video submissions, the DMC Online DJ Championships is down to 18 finalists, hungry for your votes to go through to the top 10.

NEW: NI Traktor Kontrol S2
Posted by Gizmo on August 25, 2011
NI native instruments Traktor Kontrol S2

The market for MIDI controllers is relatively established and has been built on 2 channel units. But the last 2 years has seen manufacturers knock out a stream of thankfully not me-too 4 channel units, that have been built with their own vision. But the fact remains that the vast majority of DJs only need 2 channels, so it was just a matter of time before Native Instruments lopped a couple of faders from their S4 and made the Traktor Kontrol S2.

REVIEW: Stokyo Selector
Posted by Gizmo on August 24, 2011
stokyo selector dvs switcher

Normally reviewing sees me unpacking a product, plugging in and playing for days at a time and eventually writing some words. This particular review saw me wanting to throw expensive audio interfaces across the office as I fought with the messy task of swapping over from one DVS DJ to another. Why? Because I had the Stokyo Selector switcher to check out. The unit itself works great of course, but the process of all that wiring drove me to distraction. No interfaces were hurt in the creation of this review.

UPDATE: Ableton Live 8.2.5
Posted by Gizmo on August 23, 2011
ableton live update lionA few weeks ago, Apple released the landmark OS X 10.7 Lion. And as you might expect, things got broken in the process. Not Apple things you understand, just everyone else's. I made a list of software that was a casualty of the big cat's mauling, which included Ableton Live. So users will be pleased to hear that with v8.2.5, (wait for it) Lion has been tamed, as well as a little bit of extra tweaking and polishing elsewhere.

Lost in music - 20K tracks in real terms
Posted by Gizmo on August 22, 2011

The digital age brings with it so many benefits, one of which is being able to ditch the back-breaking record bags and carry a vast collection on just a USB key. But having read comments and seen a video about the new Stanton SCS.4DJ, where having access to "only" 20,000 tracks is described as a limitation and a problem, I felt it was time to offer a long needed perspective on just what 20K tracks equates in old money, and just how the limitation might be more with the mindset of DJs and less with the technology.

Stanton SCS.4DJ review

Once upon a time, there was a stampede towards using laptops for DJing. The said stampede abruptly came to a halt when it became apparent that it was a bloody nightmare to pull off established DJ techniques without tactile controls, and thus the controller revolution was born. But there's a small but growing new revolution forming, one that is perfectly happy with the controller, but would be happier still if the laptop was left at home. And that revolution has a name - the Stanton SCS.4DJ. And as ever, I've pulled it apart, with and without laptop connected just for you.

Rane slip MP26 out stealth style
Posted by Gizmo on August 17, 2011
Rane mp26 mp25 effects

Unless my inbox has ceased to function, it would appear that the introduction of a new Rane mixer at DJ Expo appears to have been heralded with whatever the opposite of a fanfare happens to be. The all new MP26 is essentially the almost new MP25 with an effects unit crammed inside. I realise that many of you have no idea what the MP25 is, because a Rane product without a Scratch Live logo on it just doesn't make sense right? But to a great many DJs it does. Read on...

DMC meets BBC - Scratching at the Proms
Posted by Gizmo on August 14, 2011

The argument about whether a DJ is a musician is one that has raged for years now. Generally, I don't see the turntable as an instrument, nor do I see DJs as musicians per se as we generally play other people's music. But here's a little something that seriously throws a spanner in that particular works as many times DMC Champion DJ Switch gets to perform at the BBC Proms, backed by the National Youth Orchestra.

Novation's Digital DJ Tour around the UK

Novation skratchworx digital DJ tour

The digital age is rampaging through the DJ scene at a breathtaking rate, and leaving a constant stream of utterly confused people in its wake. Indeed, I'm pretty sure that some DJs still consider spinning CDs to be science fiction. So skratchworx has teamed up with purveyors of digital nextlevelness Novation who have decided to try and demystify the plethora of technology, and walk potential users through the minefield of available gear by holding in-store demos and showcases of their range at selected retailers around the UK.

RELEASED: Serato Scratch Live v2.3
Posted by Gizmo on August 11, 2011
serato scratch live 2.3 released

We've been here before just a couple of weeks ago, so this is nothing more than an "it's here" message. The beta bugs have hopefully been squished and final release of Scratch Live v2.3 is ready for prime time. Oh and there's a video after the jump, that is considerably more interesting than the words that follow. Or is it?

Rapmushi - free sketchy skratchy app
Posted by Filespnr on August 8, 2011

If you’re like me, and have spent many hours searching through YouTube video for something that is actually worth watching or, more importantly, was worth posting, you’ve seen your share of nonsense. So you can imagine my surprise when I scrolled through the 7th or 8th page of video tagged with “Android DJ,” and came across RapMushi.

COMPETITION: Stokyo and Serato Stuff
Posted by Gizmo on August 8, 2011
serato stoyko pressings

It's been a little while since I did a giveaway, but cleaning up the lab has uncovered a few choice morsels that some of you might like to grope and fondle in the privacy of your own lab. Up for grabs is some SSL based booty from my good friends at Stokyo and Serato, namely t-shirts, vinyl and slipmats. Sorry controllerists - another time I promise.

NI literally give stuff away... well near enough
Posted by Gizmo on August 3, 2011
Native instruments traktor x1 offer

Native's Kontrol X1 has been a pretty successful product, so much so that some have traitorously strayed across the imaginary divide between Traktor and Serato to sample the delights of NI's mini MIDI box of tricks. So one has to wonder why they would feel the need to offer up a free copy of Traktor Pro 2. Well they are for the next couple of months if you buy yourself an X1.

serato ITCH 2 released DJ gear reviews

The day that some though would never come is finally upon us. The Serato ITCH forum has been awash with increasingly agitated "are we there yet?" and "Sod it I'm off to Traktor posts" for ages - uncomfortably longer that Serato would be happy with. But it's here - the landmark v2 of ITCH is available today for free for all ITCH controllers.
