Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

HELP! Digital Artists required
Posted by Gizmo on July 31, 2004

Calling digital artists - I need your help.

Skratchworx will be 1 year old on September 1st and to mark the occasion, a bit of a facelift will take place. A few new features will be added - one of which will be downloads. And this is where you come in. I want to have a wide selection of turntablist desktops pictures/wallpapers. While I can provide the basic ones - I'm hoping some of you guys will flex your creative muscles and send me some of you creations.

All images supplied will be fully credited to its creator and will also have the skratchworx logo added unless it's already been slapped all over it. If you need any source images of products or skratchworx logos, holler at me.

PLASA Competition
Posted by Gizmo on July 27, 2004
PLASA is upon us again. For those of you not in the know, PLASA is one of 3 big shows in the DJ trade calendar. This particular one is good for skratchworx as it's held in London from September 12th-15th at Earls court. And the sweethearts at Articulate have been armtwisted enough to donate 3 pairs of tickets for the public DJ Sunday (normal entry is 15).

Posted by Gizmo on July 27, 2004
Stanton have release some new vinyl to compliment their recent release of Final Scratch v1.5. The new version introduced a new feature called "Lead-In Graphics" that allowed for more stability at the start of a track. This new vinyl caters for this new feature.

Mazturbation is repressing...
Posted by Gizmo on July 27, 2004
Supertracks Records in Holland have been in touch to tell us that Kypski & The Waxwankerz 'Mazturbation Tool' is being repressed by public demand. For you rather more creative and musical turntablists, this wax features "clocktaves" - you really need to check the demo here to get the full idea.

REVIEW: Vestax PDX-2000 MKII
Posted by Gizmo on July 23, 2004
The second review of the recently supplied batch of Vestax new gear is ready. The new PDX-2000 MKII was pushed through the skratchworx review mangle and came out the other end pretty much unscathed.

It's not or technical review - there's not too much you can say about decks anyway. It's more a comparison between old and new. And with pretty pictures too.

Another CDX movie...
Posted by Gizmo on July 18, 2004
Sorry to inflict more pain and agony on your already tortured ears but I've got another video of me on the CDX for you.

No more than an unedited practice session, this features a few tricks that I've been playing with over the last few weeks. 9 minutes long and full of mistakes and generally crap scratching but it gives an idea of how the CDX works and sounds. Frankly, I can't be bothered to clean up the movie - it's a warts and all view of my fast electro scratching.

UPDATE: Taken offline due to malicious attacks on the site - 3500 downloads in one week. Usually it's no more than a hundred. I'm really not worth watching anyway...

QFO update from Vestax UK
Posted by Gizmo on July 14, 2004
For those of you who just glance at the headlines rather than read all the comments, Vestax UK has come through with the latest info regarding the widely hyped (yes I'm just as guilty) and often mythical Thud Rumble/Vestax QFO deck. From the last Vestax CDX-05 post:

"The QFO is due to begin production this month, so expect the first ones in stores around the world late August. UK street price is now expected to be around 800 and it will not be a limited edition, although obviously units may be in fairly limited supply during the first few months.

REVIEW: Numark CDX - by Gizmo
Posted by Gizmo on July 12, 2004

Yes I know it took a dogs age but it's finally here - the first official skratchworx review of the Numark CDX. There's still some more audio and video to post (simply because I can, not because it needs it) and hopefully I'll have those up in a few days.

Pioneer in MP3 scandal!
Posted by Gizmo on July 12, 2004

Pioneer have said (rather than officially announced) that the DVJ-X1 DVD DJ deck will be user upgradeable to have MP3 compatibility. Pioneer's Karl Detken said this on the Pioneer Pro DJ Forum:

"FYI: The DVJ will have an MP3 playing capability upgrade in the near future. YES it will be a FREE update that you can do yourself."

Denon x1500 Update
Posted by Gizmo on July 1, 2004
After our recent review of the Denon DN-X1500 where we less than impressed with the crossfader, Denon have clearly been listening and gone back to the labs to tweak the software. The fruits of this tweaking were on show at the recent Remix Hotel event in NYC.

Denon evangelist DJ A-L was on hand to record VH1 DJ JS-1 putting the new fader software through it's paces. And as you can see in this short MP4 or this this RealMedia file, the fader is now capable of more than we could achieve out of it.
