Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

I post therefore you win
Posted by Gizmo on June 27, 2005
Now here's some good news for me - and for you too. Not only do I have my first real paying advertiser (yay!), but it's also for a competition to win some lovely shiny white i-series booty from the very nice people at Gemini.

Entitled “The i-Mix therefore i-Am Contest” - the contest will run over the next 90 days after which point Gemini will randomly select a winner from the (hopefully) long list of entries to win an i-Series package which includes two iCDJ Professional CD Player units and an iPMX 2-Channel 10” Mixer. The contest is displayed rather prominently on their front page and while you're there, check out the news section, browse the site, and take part in the little poll section where they’re putting up questions every couple of weeks that they’d like to get feedback on.

So you have nothing to lose - click the banner (when it appears) or visit the Gemini site.

DISCUSSION: What is turntablism?
Posted by Gizmo on June 25, 2005

We all know the history behind the word turntablism - DJ Babu is acknowledged as having coined the phrase to describe what he felt best suited what he did, and it seems to have gathered general acceptance - as well as a fair share of critics as well. Pedestrian, Spin Science and Skratchworx have decided that it's time to get the various verbage associated with the artform we love to be recognised in the major dictionaries around the world.

I'm not a number, I'm a free record
Posted by Gizmo on June 25, 2005
I know I can't stop mentioning the good people at Pedestrian but when they send said "hey Mark - here's one last copy of the Tutoritool™ for you to give away" - well what's a guy to do?

What we have is number 362 from the limited run of 1000. And as usual, all you have to is click on this link and send the mail.

First Rate new release
Posted by Gizmo on June 25, 2005
Being a member of the Scratch Perverts clearly indicates a man's talents on the decks. First Rate was one such person and now is most definitely back with a double album called "Walky Talkyz". And it looks like it's on vinyl only (I think) which is kinda cool. 8)

Kypski's Clocktaves available now
Posted by Gizmo on June 21, 2005
Continuing the current shift towards scratch tools for the musically inclined, Kypski's full blown "Clocktaves" is finally available.

The concept of "Clocktaves" was first seen on "The Mazturbation Tool" - pressing scales into vinyl but now is available as a full product.

Noisy Stylus signature HAK360
Posted by Gizmo on June 20, 2005
I'll state this plain and clear - I love the Ecler HAK360. The Eternal fader is an awesome piece of scratchy engineering and should be in every mixer by law. But sadly for one reason and another, Ecler's global distribution isn't what it should be so many of you will not have had a chance to use one. But it comes as music to my ears as I've just found out about a limited edition Noisy Stylus HAK360.

Ewww....
Posted by Gizmo on June 19, 2005
I'm a curious type of guy. I've had the Numark CDX for a long time now and have often wondered what the vinyl sounds like if played on a regular deck - so today I did just that. What I didn't realise was just how much crap had built up in the CDX vinyl. I feel quite ill now... sick.gif

And as old school as it gets
Posted by Gizmo on June 18, 2005
In a time before MP3, samplers, drum machines and even battle wax, there were the breaks. And even today, despite the wealth of technology around and creative people to use them, somehow we all still dip into the original beats.

If you're as old as me, you probably prayed in the Church of Tommy Boy Records - constantly checking the record stores for the latest import vinyl to fulfil the Electro craving - oblivious to the fact that the whole B-Boy scene has started some 10 years earlier in New York. Well Tom Silverman has decided that we should be reminded of the roots of this scene by releasing "Hip Hop Roots" - double vinyl featuring some of the classics from the time before Hip Hop.

REVIEW: Pedestrian's Tutoritool™
Posted by Gizmo on June 17, 2005
You can't help but have noticed the name Pedestrian splattered heavily across these pages. They came to most people's attention after they announced the Tutoritool™ - a vinyl based tutorial for budding DJs. Like myself, Laurent Fintoni from Spin Science received said package in the post and decided it would be a good idea to jot down a line or two about it.

As ghetto as it gets...
Posted by Gizmo on June 16, 2005
Now we've all had times where the kit we've used has been less than perfect or held together with gaffer tape, elastic bands or just a hope and a prayer, but Russian DJ Artyom has taken this to the extreme. Behold the DIY cassette DJ...

Ultimate luggage - again
Posted by Gizmo on June 15, 2005

A little while back, a company called Gig Skinz was brought to my attention. Being the cheeky bleeder that I am, I bellowed "do you know who I am?" down the phone and demanded a courier deliver a sample bag to my feet that instant. Duly it arrived and within minutes, colleagues were oooohing and ahhhing at my new go everywhere luggage.

My Rane - Pimped
Posted by Gizmo on June 10, 2005
Now I'm not claiming to be any kind of gifted artist or anything but I just had to do something with my Rane once I'd received Spensoar's clear faceplates. This creation took me all of oooh... 30 minutes to knock up. And an hour to cut out once I'd got it home. Honestly - they're a bitch to cut out neatly but worth it. Or at least it will be once I unless at least one creative braincell.

DISCUSSION: Why is the scene in recession?
Posted by Gizmo on June 9, 2005
I'm detecting a trend. Everywhere I go in the scene, I get a distinct feeling that manufacturers and dealers are seriously feeling the pinch.

When I first started sw_smilie.png, I struggled to keep up with the volume of news stories but now, it's really hard to find anything news worthy. New gear simply isn't being released, and anything that has been is staying on shelves - despite being quality product.

But why is this? Compare - contrast - discuss.

Software update for CDX
Posted by Gizmo on June 9, 2005
Software updates aren't normally something to get too excited about. More often than not, they put the fear of God into me for fear of total meltdown. But Numark have released an update for the CDX that could prove interesting. We're talking midi between a pair of CDX's.

REVIEW: HTFR Short Curcuit Slipmats
Posted by Gizmo on June 6, 2005
Rather than the usual "oh pleeeese send me a (insert product name here) so that I may gush and fawn over it's greatness in a review", UK dealer HTFR actually sent me something unsolicited. It might only be a pair of slipmats, but they're still worthy of inclusion in the reviews section...

REVIEW: Stanton SA12X mixer
Posted by Gizmo on June 4, 2005
There are many great mysteries in life - why does toast always fall butter side down? Why does the word "monosyllabic" have so many syllables? And just how did the Crazy Frog record get to number one? But one of the biggest mysteries for me is why didn't Stanton's SA12 Craze signature mixer do better? Guest reviewer Wozza checks one out and tells us what he thinks.

And just for balance...
Posted by Gizmo on June 3, 2005
You'd think that only Denon owners cared about their gear when you look at the flightcase coverage of late. So just so you don't think that there's only one place to get flight cases for Denon gear in the UK, Swan Cases have sent me details of their offerings as well.

Denon cases from Musicase
Posted by Gizmo on June 1, 2005

Following up on the recent Denon mixer reviews, Musicase have sent me details of cases to suit the 100 and 300 mixers plus coffins to go with the 1000 and 3000 CD decks. Personally, I reckon a 100 mixer and a pair of 1000 CD decks would fit in your back pocket...
