Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Party in the Park - Tools of War Style
Posted by Gizmo on May 25, 2007

Time for a bit of history and culture - Hip Hop style. Being a DJ fossil compared to most of you here, I remember picking up my first real Hip Hop vinyl in 1982 and thus started my continuing journey as a B-boy and DJ (although my body does ache a tad when I try and floor rock). And the original culture is alive and kicking in New York courtesy of Tools Of War, who for the 5th year running are putting of a summer of park jams, showcasing a who's who of original Hip Hop culture.

Mix and Mash to win stash
Posted by Gizmo on May 23, 2007

We all love competitions right? You guys certainly lap up the freebies when I dish them out (which reminds me...) but sometimes, to get the good stuff, you have to do a bit of work - and this is the case with Denon's new "Mix and Mash" Competition. Remix some tracks - win gear. Simple.

And for Linux users...
Posted by Gizmo on May 22, 2007

All the DVS systems are written for the established standards - various flavours of Windows, an increasing number for OS X but what about the constantly growing Linux community? If Linux is good enough for Dell to install as standard, then it's certainly going places at last. So if you're up for some free scratching, check out Xwax - open source vinyl emulation.

When 3 decks just ain't enough...
Posted by Gizmo on May 22, 2007

As a self confessed Luddite when it domes to digital solutions, it'll no doubt come as some surprise to find out that I've got no less than 4 vinyl emulation solutions in the lab right now. But just as I get to grips with those, another one comes along out of nowhere. Skratchers and skratchettes - welcome to Quad.

REVIEW: Frosted Plates
Posted by Gizmo on May 21, 2007

I know you all drool for reviews of next level DJ pr0n but sometimes, it's the simple things that deserve the attention. And it doesn't get much simpler than a slipmat. I reported a little while back about the next incarnation of Thud Rumble's Butter Rugs called Frosted Plates. Well they're here and reviewed. But that's not all - to celebrate a decade of Thud Rumble, the prices have been dropped on Butter Rugs and Frosted Plates as well as a chance to win $500 worth of Thud store credit.

All out of Torq wordplay so... v1.04 released
Posted by Gizmo on May 17, 2007

Update time. Keen to keep on top of pesky bugs and adding support for their own products to boot, v1.04 of M-Audio's Synchroscience's Torq application has been released.

Eureka! I have the answer!
Posted by Gizmo on May 16, 2007

As you might expect, I get asked many questions via email. I get my fair share of "what mixer should I buy", "can I fit a Pro X Fade in a 909?" etcetera etcetera. But the one question that keeps coming up has eluded me for too long - and now I have an answer. I now know where to buy Penny and Giles stems in the UK.

REVIEW: Gemini TT-04
Posted by Gizmo on May 11, 2007

Contrary to what some people might tell you, there are other decks besides the Technics 1200/1210 line - quite a few actually. We're aware of most of them already but one that probably gets unjustly overlooked - simply because of its brand - is Gemini's flagship TT-04. And if Roc Raida rates it higher than a TTX and a T.120 then it's good enough for you.

Old school and new school - the PDX3000mix
Posted by Gizmo on May 11, 2007

Anyone who releases a new turntable in these overwhelmingly digital times must have balls of steel, especially as turntable sales are at an all time low. But Vestax have an eye on the future for sure, having brought out possibly the best MIDI controller known to man and now adding features to their PDX range that roll with the punches as well. The third incarnation of their PDX range is old news round these parts, but now we're talking official release time and a new addition - USB as well as MIDI.

Bug Fixing Vestax Style
Posted by Gizmo on May 10, 2007

Vestax's top end MIDI controller is wowing its owners and gathering a happy following around the world. But being linked to a computer usually brings a world of pain and some owners have suffered already. It's not Vestax's fault but being the kind souls that they are, they've pinpointed a problem and issued a fix - not just for the VCI-100, but for any Traktor owner trying to use a MIDI controller.

Stealth mode - Deckadance out now
Posted by Gizmo on May 10, 2007

Choice is good right? Well there's more choice than ever now in the burgeoning DJ software market with the actual release of Image-Line's Deckadance. This software appeared pretty much out of nowhere a short time ago as a beta and now it's out there - PC only unfortunately - and as fully featured as anything on the market and then some. And for a limited time, you can grab a copy on the cheap (well slightly cheaper anyway).

All aboard the DMC battle bus
Posted by Gizmo on May 9, 2007

So last year's new sponsors at DMC ruffled a few feathers, but one year later, the Ortofon dust has settled and it's time to get back on with business. The DMC battle train hits the road once again and for the UK heads, the heats are a little more rationalised this year with only 6 events. Should make for bigger and more interesting battles.

Warning - DJ pr0n - nsfw etc
Posted by Gizmo on May 7, 2007

There's a growing tradition amongst the gadgety geek sites. I don't know if it's done in the name of sharing knowledge or if it's a simple "look at what I've got and you don't nurr nurr nu nurr nurr". But I'm going with the "wishing sw_smilie.png was as hip as Gizmodo so I'm shamelessly copying their steez" approach and undressing a virgin Traktor Scratch system before your eyes.

Wanna see my gear girlie? No really...
Posted by Gizmo on May 6, 2007

Despite what we might think, we all like dirt. So when Serato's Sam Gribben was caught in a hotel room with a hot redhead showing her his gear - on video - my interest was piqued. Sadly, it's just some boring old Serato 1.8 demo where he spills the latest beans about the product, features and the pricing. Thanks to for filming this and for making my future ventures into video incredibly hard to beat presenter-wise.

Spam Spam spam
Posted by Gizmo on May 5, 2007
Sorry good visitors of sw_smilie.png but spammers have latched onto the newest stories and are hitting the comments hard so I've had to turn the security back on the comments for a while with subsequent loss of style until I can get the coding to work right in the regular layout. Sorry again.

If carrying a laptop is just too much
Posted by Gizmo on May 4, 2007

You may remember that a while ago, LG attempted to make DJing into a handheld thing with their DJ phone thing. Yeah right - like we bought that idea by the warehousefull right? Not. And they never sent one here anyway so it was probably pants. But here is a device that fits in your hand, acts like an iPod but actually sounds like it really can achieve the handheld DJ experience. People - I give you the Pacemaker.

The Stashpack - but not just for Serato really
Posted by Gizmo on May 4, 2007

Around this time last year, we showed you the latest product to shamelessly ride the Serato train. 12 months later and a range rationalisation later, Headliner Bags are back with a super sleek new offering. The Stashpack has been optimised to be as free from clutter as possible and yet give you as much space as you need. And it comfortably fits inside the max size for a carry on as well.

Another day, another Traktor story
Posted by Gizmo on May 3, 2007

So you've bust open the piggy bank or sold a kidney to buy Traktor Scratch - what now? Or maybe you just want to know what all the fuss is about and want make an informed decision before nurturing the relationship with international kidney traders. Well now you can get the 411 or Traktor Scratch 101 or some other number probably with a US national tour where people gifted in the ways of NI will share their knowledge with you, and give away free stuff too. Though probably not copies of Traktor Scratch.

Traktor Scratch out NOW!
Posted by Gizmo on May 2, 2007

Break out the hammers and smash those piggy banks wide open. Or make some friends in the body parts game and sell a kidney because the time is now for Native Instruments' Traktor Scratch. It's on the way to DJ boutiques and emporiums around the world as we speak

Mo shows fo sho
Posted by Gizmo on May 2, 2007

With the big shows out of the way, the DJ trade goes into a sort of hibernation. RnD lab rats have nervous breakdowns post working 48 hour days getting product show-ready and marketing types process reciepts wondering just how they're going to push Frankfurt lapdancers through the PR expenses machine - which all equals a sloooooow news time. So now is an ideal time to tell you UK types about some shows coming up later this year.
