Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

2, 3... errr 4 - Break!
Posted by Gizmo on May 31, 2006
Many of us have seen the diminutive scratch legend QBert do his thing with the QFO, and indeed many have speculated that he's forgotten how to use 2 turntables. Well I was witness to his double deck skills in Leeds on Sunday, using his "Breaktionary" vinyl series. Essentially over 250 breaks expertly crafted together across 4 vinyl sets that are guaranteed to make any real b-boy bust a move and call out the nearest person - even their gran or boss. Oh and the 4th set has just been released - and if you're quick you can get them cheap as chips from Thud HQ.

Help me pay the bills
Posted by Gizmo on May 30, 2006
UPDATED! As you may or may not be aware, I'm trying to pay my not insignificant bills simply via skratchworx and my meagre web skills. So one way to help me is by using a couple of the banners I have up right now. One is for 1&1 web hosting, the other is for Apple gear. If you know of anyone in the UK who needs some high quality web hosting or wants brand new Apple gear direct from the Apple store, please get them to click on the banners to buy what they need and I'll make a few quid from affiliate earnings. I thank you.

New MixVibes demo from Troubl
Posted by Gizmo on May 30, 2006
Here's how it goes - I turn up at shows, sometimes on my own, sometimes with a trusty sidekick. What I don't have is a 10 man film crew with lighting, 4 cameras and the luxury of multi-takes. So when a perfect 2 man multi-angle MixVibes set from Troubl was asked to be taken down by the man himself, I was a tad miffed to say the least. But when you see what has been supplied in it's place, you'll appreciate why.

REVIEW: Rodec Scratchbox
Posted by Gizmo on May 27, 2006
The Rodec Scratchbox - possibly the longest ever time for product development to the point where it was entering myth and legend. But now it's here - alive and kicking in all it's silver and black glory. But the time has been well spent as Deft found out. Now it's a matter of seeing if he sends it back or will indeed have the plastic surgery and identity change he threatened.

DMC World Finals Warning!
Posted by Gizmo on May 25, 2006

New rules, new location? Well that was the plan but it seems that the 2006 DMC World Finals might not be in Paris after all. There appears to be some problems with the venue so it may well have to revert to good old Blighty. So don't go booking your flights just yet.

Heavyweight SSL Bags
Posted by Gizmo on May 24, 2006
As the next generation of Serato and Rane technology - the oh so luverly TTM57 SL - ships this week, what of exisiting users? Well Headliner Bags are making sure that your laptop, Serato and your accompanying odds and ends are safe and sound.

You have the choice of 3 types of bag depending on your lifestyle and all come in gleaming black "ballistic" nylon. Hellfire - these will even take a bullet for you. And to just finish off the effect, they're all orange inside. Nice.

UK(ITF+DMC)=Cruel Transitions
Posted by Gizmo on May 20, 2006

Did that bit of algebra make any sense? Well what happens when the current UK ITF champion and the current UK DMC champion get together? They make battle wax that's what. Silk Kuts and Muzzell have joined up to make "Cruel Transitions", the first proper release from UKT. And has a full colour cover and everything - much to the delight of UKT. They should be very proud.

And in Denon news...
Posted by Gizmo on May 20, 2006
A few things to tell you about from the otherwise quiet Denon. There's a review update - the DN-X1500 doesn't suck large faderwise anymore. Firmware upgrades have fixed that. On the horizon is the updated version with shiny silver faceplate and new fader. Denon have also enticed a highly respected turntablist into their camp. And news on the gaping hole in the review schedule that is their wonderdeck the DN-S3500.

REVIEW: Gemini CDT-05
Posted by Gizmo on May 17, 2006
Hallelujah people - Gemini tell me that the perpetual prototype that is the hybrid CDT-05 vinyl and CD turntable is at last being thrown into delivery wagons and on their way to a dealers shelf somewhere near you. And to coincide with this momentous event, the only review that matters (other than the one I got paid by DJ Mag to write) is here for your viewing pleasure.

DMC is the place to be?
Posted by Gizmo on May 17, 2006

Out with the old and in with the new - sort of. This year sees a change or two at DMC - not the sweeping changes we'd sort of hoped for but certainly a few paces in the right direction. New sponsors, big cash prizes and some flexibility with gear hopefully means some much needed freshness being brought back into the DMC battles. But rather than speak knowledgeable about something I haven't seen, I uncharacteristically dragged my usually anti-social old arse off to Leeds to investigate.

Ecler HAK380 - win one and see one
Posted by Gizmo on May 16, 2006
We all know that the new Ecler HAK380 is upon us. You seen the pictures, read the spec and now want more. So this is what I've got for you - a chance to win a spanking new 380 of your very own, in more ways than one.

Not only that, I've also got footage - taken by Lamont - of one of the Noisy Stylus performances at MusikMesse 2006. They weren't especially pleased with their earlier performances that we filmed but are more than happy for you to see this set. Take my word for it - it's just like listening to "Table Manners" but live.

Serato v1.5 goes live
Posted by Gizmo on May 15, 2006
While we're all damping our pants a little waiting for the arrival of the TTM 57, the Serato team are still busy keeping the existing owners of Serato fanboyed to the max and putting a little distance between themselves and their competitors at the same time. It's been in beta for a while but now Serato Scratch Live v1.5 is officially umm... live.

Verses and Verses and Biznizz and Fabel and I wanted to go...
Posted by Gizmo on May 8, 2006

Just a quickie and at short notice as well. If you're in London this coming weekend, you might want to check out Robert Hylton's "Verses and Verses" - a show combining the various elements of Hip Hop and fusing them together with a contemporary edge. Billy Biznizz does the music, Live To Break's Pervez choreographs and The Rocksteady Crew's VP Fabel Pabon is coming along to give his "Great Hip Hop Swindle" Lecture.

MusikMesse 2006 - Rodec
Posted by Gizmo on May 6, 2006
Finally, we saw the almost mythical Rodec Scratchbox - actually linked to turntables and being used to great effect by Lamont. But this was no ordinary demo. Granted - there was the usual smattering of scratchtasticness but the underlying tracks were constructed with Lamont's feet - well with the looping technology at his feet anyway. Not really showing off the Scratchbox so much but good to watch.
