Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

2tall release - Peaceful Warrior
Posted by Gizmo on April 28, 2006
Enough gear news for now – time for some breaks action. One time battler and now full time scratch musician and all round nice guy 2tall has some new material out. But rather than new songs, he’s ventured into breaks territory with his “Peaceful Warrior” release – a quality selection of breaks and a smattering of scratch samples as well.

Ghetto Style Rane 57?
Posted by Gizmo on April 26, 2006
Homebrew projects are really cool. We wouldn’t have Apple if it wasn’t for a couple of friends getting busy with a soldering iron. So it does warm the cockles of my heart when I see people who are more than happy to butcher perfectly good lumps of DJ hardware and turn them into something just that little bit better.

In the same style as AKEIM’s Rane 56/SSL merging project, Popeye over at the DJDecks forum has opened up his Vestax 06 and created his very own DJDecks controller.

Scratchbox 101
Posted by Gizmo on April 23, 2006
OK class - find a seat and open your web browsers at The good people at Rodec have seen fit to make a whole website (with the new .eu domain as well) featuring nothing but stuff about the ever-so-close to release Scratchbox. Pictures, manuals, spares - even a review (en français). Seems like there's little for us to do with this so get yourselves over there and take in all the info. You'll be tested at the end of the week.

MusikMesse 2006 - MixVibes
Posted by Gizmo on April 21, 2006
It must be hard being a competitor to Serato. No matter what comes out, it will always be in the shadow of the mighty SSL which after all is near perfect for what it's supposed to do. But let's give the others a chance. A couple of years ago, MixVibes came out in a rather unstable form, prone to crashing and having latency that you could measure with a sundial. But how times change and DJ Troubl was on hand to show us just how much.

UPDATE: For the time being, Troubl has asked for the routine to be taken down.

musikMesse 2006 - Numark NuVJ
Posted by Gizmo on April 19, 2006
As I've stated previously, video is the new audio. And this year, Numark are grabbing the video market by the gonads and staking it's claim in the scene. Firstly it was Virtual Vinyl as covered previously with limited video manipulation via vinyl. But NuVVJ is a more VJ oriented product coming from the Arkaos camp. Probably more for someone wanting to add visuals to their sets rather than juggling pop videos so don't be expecting DVJ performance from it.

Messe 2006 - Get down with Getdown
Posted by Gizmo on April 18, 2006
Sorry - cheesy strapline but I'm allowed moments of cheese if I so desire. Gemini didn't have anything new for us to see except the long awaited CDT-05 getting very close to production. So resident DJ Getdown did his latest routine on the CDTs. We caught it on 2 cameras, giving me the ideal opportunity to utterly destroy expertly craft a short movie.

Musik Messe 2006 - Battle of the Hybrids
Posted by Gizmo on April 15, 2006

Just before NAMM 2005 (yes that long ago) Gemini announced a product started their renaissance, the CDT-05 hybrid turntable - a product so revolutionary that nobody expected any manufacturer to bring one out any time soon. And now here we are, quite literally on the brink of the CDT-05's release and out of nowhere come not one but two lookalikes from Citronic and US Blaster. But there are subtle differences.

MusikMesse 2006 - Numark X2
Posted by Gizmo on April 14, 2006
Just a few months ago, the DJ world was rather stunned with news of Numark's (yes them again) venture in hybrid territory, as I think were other manufacturers in the same market. Obviously being the good scratch hack that I am, I tried both the X2 and the Gemini CDT-05 and sent my thoughts to Numark, picking out in particular the killer feature on the CDT of mix mode. Ooooh they weren't happy with that at all...

MusikMesse 2006 - Numark Virtual Vinyl
Posted by Gizmo on April 14, 2006
It is a fact universally acknowledged that Serato Scratch Live owns the digital vinyl market - so much so that any other manufacturer would be quite mad to bring out something new to compete with it's dominance. But Numark are on a bit of a roll right now so they decided to go for broke and bring out a vinyl manipulation program. Some might say it's a misguided move but Numark's new Virtual Vinyl does have an ace up it's sleeve - it manipulates video data as well. Take that SSL!

1st Annual Gong Battle for DJ Supremacy 2006
Posted by Gizmo on April 12, 2006
It's fair to say that the battle scene has of late been on life support - the crash cart is ready and the minister on hand to read out the last rights. But 2006 looks like it may be the rebirth of the the genre. DMC's announcement about big (or as it turned out not so big) changes and the revitalised WSTC battle show that there is still life in the genre. But Roc Raida's Gong Battle for DJ Supremacy has had people in a spin with it's radical "gong and you're outta here" idea.

So when the offer of coverage of the battle came my way, I jumped at the chance to bring people an idea of what it was all about. Guest reviewer Idlemind was on hand with his camera to capture the event and scribble some words too.

musikMesse 2006 - Numark iCDX
Posted by Gizmo on April 10, 2006
The Numark CDX caused and continues to cause my rumpus in the DJ scene. Firstly , it broke the 7" platter CD deck mould by having a full sized 12" platter but most importantly, it set the DJ world alight with real world vinyl performance from a CD deck. So when in amongst all the other Numark Messe new product madness I saw a 7" platter model bearing the CDX moniker, I had high hopes of 12" performance from only 7 inches. Well.. don't we all?

Messe 2006 - Numark D2
Posted by Gizmo on April 9, 2006

Hot on the heels of the Cortex announcement at NAMM where we all ooooohed and aaaahed about just what a simple idea using external HDs instead of CDs was, Numark have only gone and brought out their own spin on things (hahahaha see what I did there?). The Numark D2 Director (again squared if there's any doubt) takes the basic features set of the previously seen iDJ2 and adds some pro features as well.

MusikMesse 2006 - Numark iDJ2
Posted by Gizmo on April 8, 2006
You'd have to be living in a cave on Mars to not realise that the DJ scene is now being impacted by Apple's life saving wonder gadget the iPod. DJs haven't been especially quick to leap aboard the iPod bandwagon for all sorts of technical reasons but Numark seem to have embraced the iPod warmly by the dock and brought out a load of new gear based around the ever evolving iPod.

MusikMesse 2006 - Rane
Posted by Gizmo on April 5, 2006
Last year, Rane's stand was essentially a 20 mile hike from the main DJ hall - well not really but you get the idea. This year however, Rane decided to have a Serato stand where all the DJs were likely to see it, and got a prime corner location to boot. A few other odds and ends were on the stand but who cares - all we wanted to see was progress on the TTM57.

RIP Skratchshop
Posted by Gizmo on April 5, 2006
As this new and exciting phase of my life unfolds i.e. self employment, complete lack of focus, no money but so far having a ball, it's time to tidy up the loose ends of the old life - one such loose end being The Skratchshop. As of today, it is no more.

A big heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported it. 8)

MusikMesse 2006 - Vestax
Posted by Gizmo on April 3, 2006
At last year's Messe, the Vestax stand was a magnet for all the tablists in the area, especially with QBert being in attendance. Sadly this year there was no stand and no QBert but this didn't mean Vestax weren't there - just in a private suite. Thankfully we managed to get an invite into the inner sanctum and saw a couple of goodies.
