Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Home sweet home
Posted by Gizmo on March 31, 2006
The second leg of the sw_smilie.png 2006 world tour is over and we have safely arrived back in the scratchlabs - almost tripping over a factory fresh Gemini CDT-05 on the way in. Sorry for the radio silence as well - the internet service in my hotel was somewhat lacking and fatigue overtook frustration and I ended up asleep rather than bringing you the latest news from Germany. I'm sorry. Normal levels of geek scribblings and sarcasm will resume tomorrow.

MusikMesse Day 1
Posted by Gizmo on March 30, 2006
Today has been a comedy of errors from beginning to end. Not wishing to bore you with the details, let's say it involved slept through alarms, missed planes, lost hotel and lost keys. But we finally arrived and saw... well... not a huge amount to be honest. I have a shedload of pics but frankly I'm too shagged out to post them all but I'll skim over the details and send you in the direction of my hastily created gallery.

Numark next gen gearfest!
Posted by Gizmo on March 28, 2006

Like I said before, Numark have some new products... Jeeeez but will they ever stop bringing out innovative next gen products? Clearly kicking the arse of all the competition in the boundary pushing department, Numark have a whole heap of products coming out tomorrow. Sadly, I have to get up at some ungodly hour in the morning (3.45am) to catch a flight and need to get to bed but seeing as Numark have all the info up anyway, head over to Numark's site and get the latest info.

Numark in IDJ Sequel shocker!
Posted by Gizmo on March 28, 2006
Now coming up to tomorrow's MusikMesse event, I'd heard (but not told) about yet more new product coming from Numark. As if the HDX and X2 weren't enough, Numark have taken their loved/hated iPod mixer the IDJ, listened to the comments from consumers and given it one hell of a facelift. People - IDJ2 is here. Just in time for my new iPod.

LINK: Engadget and thanks to Xman for the heads up!

Practice? Woody? Surely not...
Posted by Gizmo on March 26, 2006
The UK's own DJ Woody isn't known for putting out much in the way of material. A little while back we were treated to his journey through UK Hip Hop with his "Bangers and Mash" CD. Now, along with obsessive digger Sean Vinylment, the guys have pulled together an amazing journey through beats called "A Country Practice".

Free at last!
Posted by Gizmo on March 25, 2006
Long time followers of sw_smilie.png will know that it's more than just a news and reviews site - it's like a personal journal of the life of yours truly. Well yet another truly life changing event has just happened - the end of my 22 year career.

This story isn't just for the regular visitors, but also for my former colleagues as well. I'm sure I missed a few people yesterday so I bid those people a fond farewell and thank them all for the engraved photo iPod and the extremely apt and pant-wettingly funny "Skratchstrap".

R.I.P. DJ Swing
Posted by Gizmo on March 23, 2006
No words from me, just some from Paul at Punch Records:

"We've just heard the very sad news that DJ Swing passed away last night. As many of you will know, Swing had been suffering from multiple myeloma since 2003. Last October he underwent a bone marrow transplant from a donor with an 90% match - still a much greater risk than a 100% match. Since then the news had been good and Swing left hospital in January. Swing was an inspiration to multiple myeloma sufferers everywhere and was one of the most positive people you could ever meet - he will be sorely missed by us all and our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Swing was one of the main inspirations behind the DJs for Life project and, as many of you will know, the DJs for Life red wristbands were concieved as a money raising exercise for Swing's related charities. We're obviously all pretty devestated to hear the news.

A 100% match was never found for Swing, partly due to the difficulty of finding matching donors within the black community and the lack of donors registered. So today take some time out to think of Swing and visit the Afro Caribbean Leukemia Trust website and the Myeloma Foundation website to donate some money and find out about the next donor registration session. RIP Brian."

Peace and good wishes go out from sw_smilie.png and it's visitors to DJ Swing's family and friends..

World Tour Part 2
Posted by Gizmo on March 22, 2006
The sw_smilie.png World Tour 2006 marches on like the Roman army across Europe. Having ventured to La La Land for NAMM, now it's the turn of MusikMesse in Frankfurt - 29-31 March - to brace themselves for the the marauding army that it sw_smilie.png. When I say marauding army I do of course mean lil old me and NdB but we're not to be messed with. We're on a mission to cover everything we possibly can within the space of 3 days.

Ecler announce HAK380
Posted by Gizmo on March 21, 2006
We've been talking about this for a while now but at last it's here. In conjunction with top scratch crew Noisy Stylus, Ecler have announced a new mixer in the HAK lineup. Being shown for the first time at this year's MusikMesse in Frankfurt and brought to you here exclusively on sw_smilie.png - ladies and gentleman I give you the Ecler HAK380.

Going going...
Posted by Gizmo on March 16, 2006
...almost gone. Yesterday was the first day of the skratchshop closing down sale. I must have shifted more vinyl than HMV. But it did make me realise that if everyday was like this, I'd despise it with a passion.

The obvious seller was the battle wax - all snapped up by yesterday afternoon. Thanks for that people. Got a handful of DVDs left, a Noisy Stylus bag and one Sound Material battle CD. So let's see if we can shift the last remaining items over the next day or so.

OK folks - stockingtaking has been done, everything ticked off on the stock sheets and prices marked down to sell sell sell! The final Skratchshop closing down sale is on!

I've marked everything down to a point where I make no more than 1 on a single item - on some even less because I want it all gone. No deals - no haggling - the marked price is what you pay plus the postage of course. So buy the Noisy Stylus LP or CD and replace that dodgy downloaded version and stock up on battle wax and DVDs.

The end of a really short era
Posted by Gizmo on March 13, 2006
6 months ago, I launched The Skratchshop - a life changing event in more ways than one. And 1 months ago, I decided to toss in my 9-5 and live my dream of self employment. With that came an insane amount of deep, introspective and ruthlessly realistic thinking. Part of this thinking is just where the hell the mortgage payment is coming from. Well it's sure as hell not coming from the Scratchshop. Thus it has to go to allow me to concentrate on things that do pay the bills.

REVIEW: Audio Innovate AEM-100
Posted by Gizmo on March 11, 2006
It's not very often that startup companies come onto the scene with products like DJ gear but Audio Innovate did just that. Brainchild of form Numark engineer Elliot Marx, the first product to come from the AI drawing board is the AEM-100 - a mixer that takes the established scratch mixer format, adds in an old school analog synth style effects section and comes complete with the oh so wonderful Pro X Fade.

Pro X Fade - US US y'all
Posted by Gizmo on March 6, 2006
I think this is the equivalent of commercial suicide seeing as I stock the Pro X Fade myself but the rather splendid purveyors of all things DJ-like Turntable Lab have finally answered the prayers of eager cash ready scratch DJs - The Pro X Fade is now available in the United States of America.

As seen in DJ Mag
Posted by Gizmo on March 5, 2006
More good news of the sw_smilie.png global domination quest. Seems that the quality of our reviews and the respect that they get from all corners of the trade, our words are required by the press as well. If you guys check out this issue of DJ Mag in the UK, you'll find a Vestax PMC-08 review redone by your truly. I guess this makes me a real journo now rather than a self made internet hack.

REVIEW: Vestax CF-CC Crossfader
Posted by Gizmo on March 3, 2006
Vestax have for some time realised that their stock faders have been a tad less that the best available. Users have had to do all kinds of lag and scrape mods to get the standard VCA to a point where people were relatively happy. But in the face of 3rd party replacements such as P&G and Pro X Fades, Vestax have done something about the tarnished rep of their mixers - enter the CF-CC lag adjustable fader.

Pro X Fade and Urei - modding ahoy!
Posted by Gizmo on March 2, 2006
We at skratchworx like the Urei mixers. Some of the team covet the 1620 and the others that have far too many channels for my liking. For me though, it's all about the 1601S - the 2 channel wonder with the sampler. But sadly, it has a pants crossfader - which is a surprise as the rest of the mixer is such a high spec. So Now Urei have got their proper scratch head screwed on and have released instructions which show you how to replace the stock fader with the PXF. YAY!

Skratchshop March 2006 Update
Posted by Gizmo on March 2, 2006
As you're all aware, I just made the reckless life changing decision to quit the relative comfort of my 9-5 and live my dream. This dream is hopefully going to include furnishing the skratchworx visitors with some fine scratchware courtesy of my little skratchshop. Freshly updated with a few new bits and bobs plus there's some special offers on Noisy Stylus stuff and some pretty cool t-shirts too. Head over there now and empty my stock cupboard today!
