Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

DISCUSSION: Battle Wax
Posted by Gizmo on March 29, 2005
As I work hard to finish, tweak and generally nuture the new sw_smilie.png site into a finished reality, it occurred to me that the skratch DJ gear we buy most often - vinyl - is scandalously under-represented on the site. It even has it's own section yet I've never really done much with it. That will change and anything I've bought or received in the last year will get reviewed and rated. Ultimately, I'll work it up into a regularly updated section.

In the meantime, I'm interested in what you guys think. What is your favourite wax? Are you straight out battler or do you hanker for the more melodic style? Share with us your favoured skratch tools and very importantly why.

Slikmats V2 Pro!
Posted by Gizmo on March 24, 2005
Slikmats have established themselves as a pre-eminent force in the international slipmat market - or rather they make really cool mats with any design you can think of - aaaannd they're actually very good under your vinyl as well. I reviewed them ages ago and gave them a hefty 9/10 - a rating I still stand by. Now blow me down if they don't bring out Slikmats the sequel - V2 Pro slikmats.

T's tease...
Posted by Gizmo on March 24, 2005
As MusikMesse approaches, it's time for me to set new standards of sartorial skratch elegance - thus I commissioned my friend Gaz at Slikmats to run me up some new shirts for the show. And I just had to get the MogwaiPod made up as well. 8)

Sonic Spladdow Breaks from DJ Slyce
Posted by Gizmo on March 23, 2005
Sketchy details reaches us about some new battle wax from former US DMC champ DJ Slyce called "Sonic Spladdow Breaks". Currently being carried by Fat Beats in NYC, you can get a quick listen here. Sounds cool to me. 8)

The battle bag has landed!
Posted by Gizmo on March 22, 2005
A little while back I told you about Tre Styles from Noisy Stylus getting his baggage head on and designing a proper turntablists bag... well I just got my very own - in gleaming Gucci Black - in readiness for the 3 day route march that is MusikMesse in Frankfurt.

Gemini TT-04 minor update
Posted by Gizmo on March 17, 2005
Checking the various manufacturer sites, I stumbled across new images and a new press release for the Gemini TT-04 top of their range turntable. Well I say new - the release appears to be identical to the last bar a new release date of April. And comparing the images old and new, there's some minor changes around the start/stop switch and different coloured LEDs.

An antidote to that f**king frog...
Posted by Gizmo on March 13, 2005
I've just had 4 days off work - during which I had the TV on watching music videos. But every 10 minutes those utterly annoying ringtone companies were bombarding me with the oh so Crazy Frog and Sweet Chick ringtones. So receiving news that sw_smilie.png favourite DJ Skilz has been immortalised in MP3 ringtones was welcome relief indeed. Although it's highly likely to be US only.

REVIEW: Stanton STR8-150 Deck
Posted by Gizmo on March 13, 2005
At last! We finally have a review of Stanton's flagship deck, the STR8-150. If I'd extracted my digit quicker, I probably would have done this one next but thanks to guest reviewer Wozza, I don't have to.

Note that the STR has undergone a cosmetic facelift and only a top view of the deck is available in the new style so don't pull me on the mix and match of old and new styles.

After a few last minute hitches, the new Thud Rumble site is up.

This new site expands on the existing one but with a new cleaner style and a few extra features. You'll find some short video interviews with QBert as well as an expanded new store and better news coverage. Go check it out.

I had to show you these...
Posted by Gizmo on March 9, 2005
As you all know, I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy - so these should come as no surprise to you.

Inspired by the iPod ads, I set about creating my very own homage. These will be appearing on some slips I'm having made and probably on a t-shirt as well. Though I seriously doubt I'll be making any commercially - I really can't stand the thought of Apple and Speilberg lawyers knocking my door down to serve papers... push.gif

DJ Disk's new site
Posted by Gizmo on March 7, 2005
I was away from the scene for a loooong time and some things passed me by - including the legend that is DJ Disk. Having watched his set at the Viper Room gig recently, I'm very happy to say that Disk is coming back strong. A new site and a promise of a new album by the end of the year. Nothing to do with gear, but worth giving the man some coverage.

WTF? HP's DJammer
Posted by Gizmo on March 6, 2005
Brace yourselves people - open your mind and prepare to try and take in this concept. Can you imagine mixing and scratching without actually touching the deck? Well HP have come up with a device to let you do just that.

The nearest I can equate it to is a DJ joystick. If you're not one for new DJ technology, turn away now...

Vestax CLS-1 fader fixers
Posted by Gizmo on March 6, 2005
In these times of ultra-tiny crossfader lag times and cut-ins, the pressure is on for manufacturers to bring out crossfaders with similarly tiny adjustments. It's fair to say that Vestax crossfaders don't offer this level of adjustment so to combat this, they've made the CLS1 - fader cut lag spacers. So now you can get your credit cards out but stop cutting them up.

PS Series mixers from Gemini
Posted by Gizmo on March 5, 2005
2005 looks like the year that Gemini come back strong. We've already seen the new decks, CDT-05 hybrid and prototype single deck, now Gemini are releasing the PS series of 3 channel mixers.

Probably of most interest will be the PS-03 and PS-04 mixers, all with full fader curves, EQ kills and each having it's own flavour of extras.

DISCUSSION: DJ - Props or just a prop?
Posted by Gizmo on March 2, 2005

Today, I want to discuss the most important piece of hardware in the whole DJ setup - the DJ.

For a very long time, I've silently seethed while watching music shows over the way the DJ is treated. Often times, the latest here today gone tomorrow generic urban star won't be seen on stage without a DJ stood behind them. What really bothers me is when the "DJ" clearly doesn't know one end of a deck from a mixer and worst still, the gear isn't even turned on.

So is the DJ seen as simple a must have accessory with no artistic merit, or should we be stood at the front like Slash or The Edge? Are these urban stars actually doing DJ's a favour by including us at all even when it's clear that there's been no DJ input into a track? Should we rise up and be counted? Shouldn't Jazzy Jeff have DJ'd at the Olympics? Why are scratch DJ's the poor relation in the DJ scene?
