Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Apple's Ghettoblaster
Posted by Gizmo on February 28, 2006
It had to happen really. Those of us old enough to enjoy the delights of old school ghetto blasters - you know... the huge plastic encased speakers that played cassette tapes (look them up in Google)? Well Apple have now brought us the digital age equivalent. B-Boys and B-girls - say wassup to the iPod Hi-Fi.

Pioneer CDJ - the next generation
Posted by Gizmo on February 22, 2006
Today, Pioneer announced (officially at least) the new range of CDJ decks - the CDJ-1000 MK3 and the CDJ-800 MK2. These long awaited updates include a selection of new and improved features but most importantly, amongst other important things, they handle MP3 - Hurrah! This is something Pioneer have shied away from because of the vague and ambiguous laws surrounding digital music usage. Well they're still a bit fuzzy but you have to go with the flow I guess and give punters what they want.

Ebsel to take on the world
Posted by Gizmo on February 20, 2006
There are times when forces of nature come together to form something unique. Such an event was the inception of the Pro X Fade crossfader, created by Eclectic Breaks and Selmark. Seeing the complimentary skillset work and work well, the guys decided to make a new partnership to makes waves and hopefully more new gear for the DJ scene. Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you EBSEL.

The Rules according to DMC
Posted by Gizmo on February 16, 2006
Well we've patiently waited since the momentous announcement last year of the whole change in how the future DMC World Championships will be handled. There were rumours of all manner of digital madness being allowed with people imagining Controller1's and 909s being used to create a disitinctly different sound to what we're used to from battles. And now the official word has reached us from DMC Towers - the new rules are in.

I'm not a number, I'm a free man
Posted by Gizmo on February 15, 2006
Well I am now.

Today marks another momentous day in the evolution of skratchworx. A little over 2 years ago, skratchworx was born. Between then and now, skratchworx has spawned the skratchshop and the skratchlounge - a veritable skratch empire. My mornings and evening were spent trying and largely failing to juggle all the balls life throws at me and more often than not, I end up dropping them all. So enough is enough - the time has come to take the empire to the next level.

Today I quit my 9-5....

OEM Hybrids?
Posted by Gizmo on February 12, 2006
Running up to trade shows, manufacturers tease the unsuspecting public with glimpses of new products. One manufacturer not known for releasing ground breaking product is Citronic. Well they haven't this time either, but have indeed slapped their logo on a product neither I nor eagle-eyed Deft was expecting...

WSTC Update
Posted by Gizmo on February 11, 2006

The first and true online turntablist battle the WSTC is in full swing and there's some serious action throwing down over at www.slickbeats.net. It's down to the final 8 competitors and things are heating up for sure. Big ups to Tobias from Slickbeats and the co-founder and owner of the WSTC Loop Skywalker for making this such a great battle. But to give the winners the best possible prize, we need your help.

WestendDJ's day trip to NAMM
Posted by Gizmo on February 7, 2006
Seems I wasn't the only Englishman scouring the floors of the Anaheim Convention Centre for hot DJ gossip. Armed with a better camera but hardly any battery by the end of Sunday was Eitan from WestendDJ in London. Clearly better at this kind of thing than me, he took some quality footage and secured some informative infomercials for the growing WestendDJ.TV website. Check the NAMM footage here.

REVIEW: Gemini iKey
Posted by Gizmo on February 6, 2006
Diminutive... small... diddy... wee... are all words to describe Gemini's little white hope the iKey. This tiny lump of iPoddish niceness aims to make your recording needs a tad easier by being the missing link between you and your external USB devices. Deft and Gizmo cast their eyes over one and like what they find.

NAMM 2006 - Cortex
Posted by Gizmo on February 6, 2006
A brand new player in the digital market is Cortex. While other companies are wrestling with CDs, DVDs, HDs and probably other things ending in Ds, Cortex have taken the novel approach and aren't doing Ds at all. In fact they're doing Bs - USBs that is. For Cortex, built-in media is soooo yesterday - it's all about external USB devices for song storage. So now you can just plug and go. Or plug and play, depending on your preference for hijacked advertising straplines.

NAMM 2006 - Rane
Posted by Gizmo on February 3, 2006
There are some indisputable facts in the scratch scene - one is that the Rane TTM56 is arguably the favourite if not best scratch mixer. Another is that Serato Scratch Live is the best digital DJ solution. So Rane in their infinite wisdom thought it might be a bit cool to shoehorn SSL under the bonnet of a 56. Well we all thought that anyway and DJ Akeim even beat them to it. So it comes as no surprise whatsoever that the 57 was created.
