Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Sod off 2009!

2009 2010 happy new year DJ

As we stand by the door, waving off 2009 like the annoying pervy old relative who outstayed their welcome at Christmas, I can't let it pass without pulling the last remaining bit of dried chicken off the carcass and chewing it one last time in the name of an end of year round up.

Yay - time for a break. This latter half of 2009 has been crazy but hugely worthwhile. So I'm off for a couple of days of other people cooking and generally disengaging my brain from skratchworxiness. I'll be back to push a few words around the page and post some late reviews and suchlike. But I do wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, happy holiday or whatever you do at this time of year.

REVIEW: Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2
Posted by Gizmo on December 23, 2009

Still time for reviews to be slipped in this year, and this is for one of the smallest and cheapest units on the scene. The not at all snappily named Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 is the diddiest controller I've played with, and at 99 is also one of the cheapest too. Approaching it for review as an experienced DJ brought up a unique set of issues, but undaunted I scaled down my expectations and wrote lots of words.

COMPETITION: Merry Magmas!
Posted by Gizmo on December 16, 2009

It's that time of year, where thoughts turn to squeezing in some last minute shopping for ill thought out Christmas gifts. Well bugger that - how about a bit of me me me time? Thanks to my good buddies at Magma, you can do just that. Up for grabs is a new Magma Digi Bag, a headshell case, a pair of Magma slip mats, but most importantly a pair of extremely limited edition Desolat Traktor grey marble control vinyls - so limited in fact that even members of NI might enter this comp just to get their hands on some.

You don't have to be a Rane surgeon...
Posted by Gizmo on December 11, 2009

It's that time people - when R&D labrats are chained to desks and mainlined with a diet of triple expresso, Redbull and Haribo - and marketing types get all mysterious and chuck out a few measly morsels of teaser PR for us journos to tear apart to see if there's a hidden code or special meaning behind carefully chosen words. Well Rane are first out of the Pre-NAMM starting blocks with a short but sweet email.

He's the DJ, I'm the writer - Rafik on the Kontrol X1
Posted by Gizmo on December 9, 2009

Having taken some time off to fondle the new Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol X1 on an away mission, Mr Postie (sounds better than Mr Courier-ie) just dropped off a pre-Christmas pressie in my open waiting arms - a spanking new X1 with a serial number (thus assuming it's a final unit) but sans the usual spiffing packaging. Who cares - I would have just torn it off anyway. And coinciding with this are a handful of cracking hot Rafik vids, showing off his shit hot skills, and also what a little practice can pull off with a heap of NI gear.

The Touchtable - in the palm of your hand... hopefully
Posted by Gizmo on December 7, 2009
touchtable MIDI controller

While we rampage towards squeezing the regular DJ experience into the smallest space, I thought the optimum size had been reached - until now. MASC Design have managed to compress basic deck functions into a sleek 4 inch square slice of MIDI goodness. Say hello to the Touchtable.

IDA UK Champion - RASP!
Posted by Gizmo on December 5, 2009
_

In a Dermot O'Leary X-Factor style, the lines are now closed. Votes have been cast, counted, checked for multiple emails (you know who you are) and all non UK entries removed. And the winner is now known. DJ Rasp is the new IDA UK Champion and will be going to Poland next weekend to represent us at the IDA 2009 World Final. Well done Rasp!

REVIEW: ION Discover DJ
Posted by Gizmo on December 3, 2009
ION Discover DJ review

There is a misconception that the more a lump of gear costs, the better you'll be as a DJ. And given the stratospheric prices being routinely charged in these alleged credit crunch times, you might expect that a beginner can become a superstar DJ overnight simply by buying particular brands of DJ stuff. Well they can't, but they have to start somewhere. And at the polar opposite end of the cost scale is ION's Discover DJ, but as I (wait for it) discovered, it is a highly capable unit indeed. And it's out just in time for Christmas too.

THE IDA UK ONLINE FINAL!
Posted by Gizmo on December 2, 2009
_

It's battle time people. Picking up the pieces of the cancelled IDA UK Final and Roc Raida benefit, I called for 3 minute online entries for you - the UK based judging public - to judge for yourselves rather than a small team of gathered DJ celebs. Well today is that day, and I've got a small but perfectly formed selection for you to chose from to select the 2009 IDA UK champion.

UPDATE: Voting is closed and Rasp was voted winner!
