Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

First seen at MuskMesse, Magma's Switchbox aims to solve a digital DJ dilemma - switching from set to set with the minimum of fuss. Well now it's out there and the truly wonderful guys at Magma have sent me 2 hand crafted customised Switchboxes - one of which will end up in somebody's lucky hands. Yes - I'm giving the blue one away!

Wanted - room for MusikMesse without selling vital organs
Posted by Gizmo on December 30, 2007
MusikMesse 2008

With NAMM but days away and Musik Messe happening in MId March, my mind and bank balance turn to organising my annual trip to Frankfurt. This will be my fifth trip and as ever, I'm looking for a great deal on a room. But it seems that great deals and Frankfurt hotels have become mutually exclusive terms.

42 - The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything*
Posted by Gizmo on December 27, 2007
Gizmo is 42

So here I am, sat before my ageing Powerbook (which is considerably older than me in computer years), pondering what has been, what is and what has yet to come. From what I can remember of what has been, it's had its fair share of ups and downs but has at least delivered me to this point almost in one piece - and happy too. What is changes all the damned time. I think I've got a plan - a route map laid out in front of me and then something comes long, picks up my plan, scoffs and uses it to wipe its arse. What is yet to come is the most interesting and pant wettingly exciting. If my life keeps unfolding the way it has been in the last 2 years (and more specifically the last 3 months), I'm going to be one happy DJ hack.

If you haven't figured it out yet, today is my birthday. And life sure is good.

Merry Christmas from the twat in the hat
Posted by Gizmo on December 24, 2007
Right people - time to wind down for Christmas. Chez sw_smilie.png, everything is wrapped and under the not inconsiderable tree and we're getting ready for a day of food, drink and probably much argument around the xbox. I'm having a few well deserved days away from the keyboard and will no doubt be indulging in some pretty dire TV instead of posting news and reviewing the d.2 Pro and Korg Zero4 that currently sit in the lab lighting the room up more than the Christmas tree I've installed for the first time.

I'll be sitting down before the end of the year for a customary review of what's happened this year and maybe even what we can look forward to in 2008. One last thing - screw political correctness and the word "winterval". Santa comes to our house whether the PC police like it or not. The team really do wish you a Merry Christmas and send Seasons Greetings to everyone, whatever corner of the sw_smilie.png universe you find yourself in.

NAMM 2008: The InnoFader from Audio Innovate
Posted by Gizmo on December 23, 2007
audio innovate AI Innofader

Purveyors of analog effects mixer magic Audio Innovate are at it again. Not content with simply flipping the script a little on analog effects laden scratch mixers, they've been pondering and pouring over the idea of a new type of capacitance based crossfader technology. And after a few sleepless months deep in the AI labs, owner Elliot Marx has cracked the technology and brings you the InnoFader. But you need to read the PR to full understand just what's on offer here.

NAMM 2008: new stuff from GCI

Gemini Cortex ikey NAMM 2008 CDM-3600

More Pre-NAMM blurb, this time from GCI Technologies (that's Cortex, iKey and Gemini to you). As ever, they'll have some new stuff to show you as well as the much anticipated HDTT-500 that is now "99.9% like a CDJ" in terms of feel. Oh really?

NAMM 2008: Ebsel launch PXF2

Pro X fade 2 PXF2 Ebsel NAMM 2008 cross fader crossfader

We've been oh so patient haven't we? The Pro X Fade has been on the market for a good while with the promise of the more compatible PXF2 tantalisingly just out of reach on the horizon. We it seems that the wait will be over very soon with the PXF2 being officially launched at NAMM 2008. No really...

Video-SL beta out - but crippled

SSL Serato Video-SL video mixing

Having just pissed off SL1 users with news of the imminent release of the TTM57SL only Video-SL plugin, it seems that Serato are happy for those lucky enough to own the 57 can now give the software a blast and for free but only in a teeny weeny window.

NAMM - can't be in 2 places at once
Posted by Gizmo on December 18, 2007
NAMM show Winter 2008

NAMM draws near people. While most are thinking about the Christmas and New Year festivities, DJ manufacturers will still be cracking the whip on Christmas Day at the lab rats to make sure that this years slice of nextlevelness™ makes it to Anaheim and doesn't explode in someone's face. Between now and Jan 17th, I'll be feeding you any prereleases that come my way but like last year, I won't be there. Allow me to explain...

Mindless waste of time but....

Rave Generator back to the old school forums Blade187

...I'm completely powerless to resist. If you're sat at work, winding down towards the Christmas break and are of a certain age (or just like Old School Rave) then this is for you. Blade187 from the Back to the Old School forums has knocked together this utter classic Rave Generator.

King of the cuts on Traktor turntables
Posted by Gizmo on December 13, 2007
Grandmaster Flash Traktor Scratch

One by one, the DJ a-listers, scratch VIPs and those generally looking down from the very top of the DJ ladder are making the move from the comfort zone of vinyl and leaping headlong into the big wide new world of digital DJing. One of the biggest names in the game has now made his move for Grandmaster Flash has pondered, cogitated and finally made his move, and that move is into the Traktor Scratch camp.

More mats from Mr Suzuki

Table Cloths v2 Dr Suzuki D-Styles

Sequels are rarely better than the original. But when you're talking about 2 great minds coming together to improve their original design, only good things can happen. So Dr Suzuki and D-Styles have hooked up once more to bring you Table Cloths v2, which hopefully will be easier to get hold than the first.

"Hi is that my Pro Tools install?"
Posted by Gizmo on December 11, 2007
protools LE iPhone control

The cool guys over at createdigitalmusic have unearthed something pretty bloody hot in my opinion. Not for the fact that it's an iPhone/iPod Touch crack, but for the potential applications for this and the DJ. In a nutshell, Alex Le Lievre has managed to crack open the ProTools control protocol and replicate the ProTools experience on his iPhone.

Serato and video, but not for everyone

Serato Rane Video-SL video mixing SSL

Finally, official release details of Serato's long fabled venture into the realms of video have been released. It's much as expected (or at least what I expected), but I can already feel a disturbance in the Serato force. SL1 owners will be getting hot under the collar and throwing hissy fits at the apparent snub, but I'm sure there's a good reason - one which I'll try to explain.

REVIEW: Pioneer CDJ-400
Posted by Gizmo on December 8, 2007
Pioneer CDJ-400 CDJ400 review

It's been quite literally years since I reviewed any Pioneer gear so when an early production CDJ-400 was thrust under my nose, I of course rearranged my busy schedule to play at length with the newest CDJ and thought it might be an idea to scrawl a review for you guys. But take note - this is not only words and pictures, but video as well. Brace yourself - I may have entered the Youtube generation good and proper.

Thud Rumble sale 2007

Just in time for Christmas, Thud Rumble have decided to slash prices big time across the Thud store. Not only that, there's free shipping on orders over $125 (for US residents anyway). But if you look, you'll see bundles of DIY, Skratchy Seal and the Needle Thrashers series too.

Seasonal demos from Quality DJ
Posted by Gizmo on December 7, 2007

New friend of skratchworx Quality DJ in Edinburgh (yes that's Scotland) is capitalising on the festive season with weekends of demos in their shop all the way up to Christmas. Sounds like a good excuse to get out of the house to play with DJ stuff and gorge yourself on "light refreshments" to me. blink1.gif

Tissue warning - more Denon info
Posted by Gizmo on December 7, 2007
denon dh-hs5500 dnhs5500 hs5500

T'was but a few years ago when vinyl was all the rage. Spinning anything else was unheard of, but now the digital age has officially hunted down and destroyed real media and replaced it with data. Manufacturers are playing cat and mouse releasing - or at least announcing - their latest and greatest slices of nextlevelness™ for the very gear hungry masses. And it looks like Denon have just climbed to the top of the manufacturer food chain with more juicy info on their media-free purely digital music player/turntable/deck the DN-HS5500.

New Technics? Kinda sorta
Posted by Gizmo on December 6, 2007
Technics SL-1200MK6

It's not very often that Technics have something to announce but it seems that a 1200MK6 is due. Word coming out of Japan indicates a seemingly not that revised model with a special 35th anniversary model as well. I'm sorry but I can't even raise but the smallest of woots for this one.

REVIEW: HTFR Exclusive KRK Red RP5 monitors

KRK Rokit RP5 Red HTFR Monitor review

When I was but a small boy, The Green Cross Code Man told me to stop, look and listen (UK cultural reference - look it upon wikithingy). This is very sound advice (haha... see what I did there?) and is especially true of these aesthetically and aurally friendly limited edition HTFR exclusive KRK Rokit RP5 monitors. I guess that statement is entirely subjective really, but I certainly liked them while they sat in the refurbished skratchlab.

Headshell sculpture from Ortofon
Posted by Gizmo on December 3, 2007
Ortofon headshell

In these digital times, very little happens in the world of vinyl. But of course Ortofon have stepped up and pumped much money into DMC and brought out digital-specific carts (Arkiv and Digitrack). But I spied these in the latest Ortofon brochure, and despite emails and PMs to Ortofon, I can't give you any other info.
