Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

Numark Prefessional Computer total mobile Dj in a box

Deciding on a DJ system in the digital age is requiring rather more knowledge than ever before. Confusion reigns when working out if you need a mixer or not and just where do the headphones plug in? Fear not for leaders of the digital school Numark have wrapped up all the necessary gubbins into 3 distinct packages for DJs of all levels.

Akai MPK49 - finally
Posted by Gizmo on November 21, 2007

Oh how the DJ scene is changing. DJ setups used to be so simple - 2 turntables and a mixer was all you needed. But now, it seems that if you can plug it into your setup, you will. MIDI controllers, MPCs.... hang on - let's slap those 2 together and make one device to rule them all. Enter the Akai MPK49 - the all in one MIDI keyboard and MPC style controller.

Lights... camera... review?
Posted by Gizmo on November 18, 2007

As you all know, sw_smilie.png has built its reputation purely on lengthy reams of sarcastic intellient opinion and photos, with just the occasional smattering of videos. But one thing has struck me during my recent trips to trade shows: manufacturers are having video cameras shoved into their faces and giving an impromptu sales pitches for their latest next level product, regardless of how comfortable they feel under the spotlight and with little regard for the alcoholic hammering they may have given their liver until 6am that very morning. So I ask this - is the written word being usurped by the spoken word? Should I get with the program, wake up and smell the coffee and use several other well trodden clichés but basically start posting more video? Is that what you want? Well do you?

You can always depend on those Mixvibes guys for some great video eye candy. We've seen Kodh and Netik but now it's time for another French turntable giant to show what Mixvibes is capable of.

BPM - The new PLASA for UK DJs
Posted by Gizmo on November 17, 2007
BPM show 2007 review

You will have read my piece on just how terrible this year's PLASA was from a DJs perspective. Well having spent 2 days at BPM I have come to the realisation that unless something quite radical happens, PLASA is dead to me. This BPM event has very firmly put the final nail in the coffin and been hoisted onto the shoulders of the DJ pallbearers. Yay - one less reason to go to London.

iTunes gets that SYNCing feeling
Posted by Gizmo on November 17, 2007
Beatport SYNC Native instruments Traktor

Beatport (or as I like to call it the iChoons store) and best buddies Native Instruments have decided that not only should you buy all your music from Beatport, but you should also play them all in SYNC - a free player based on Traktor. Essentially a sort of bluey green totally gutted version of Traktor, SYNC provides the basics needed for music playback, but also rudimentary tools for mixing. The great news is that it's free and available for Mac and PC.

Another week, another Denon update
Posted by Gizmo on November 16, 2007
denon dn-hd2500 midi

One week, it's Serato native support for the Denon DN-HC4500 the next it's messing with the brain of their DN-HD2500 media player and turning into a MIDI controller, capable of full control of all MIDI software capable of mapping. Don't worry - it's a simple firmware upgrade and it's free.

Serato Numark DMC2 Pioneer CDJ-400

Serato's quest for DJ world domination continues. Having assimilated the new Denon DN-HC4500 Borg style, Serato have moved onto conquer Numark's DMC2 and the spanking new Pioneer CDJ-400. I sense that this is just the beginning.

If you ain't down wiv r posse then you'll just have to remain in the dark and serves you right for not hanging with the hep cats. But at BPM, I came across the perfect answer to the ironing board issue - the Road Ready RRSTANDT.

Korg KAOSS PAD KP3 firmware update V2

OK - so maybe just maybe I jumped the gun and announced what was yet to be. It doesn't mean it wasn't, but now it is - the Korg KAOSS Pad KP3 update that is. Oh you know what I mean.

MixMash ClipMash custom music video DVD

As previously reported, MixMash's new custom DVD service ClipMash is almost ready to rock and roll - or whatever your musical preference might be. I got a quick demo as well as an insight into why a download service can't happen just yet.

BPM 2007 - Vestax

In recent years, Vestax have chosen to pimp their new stuff to the trade behind closed doors. This year however, the BPM organisers made the UK distributor Leisuretec an offer they couldn't refuse - and duly, the Vestax BPM stand was born.

Behringer DDM-4000

A quick update on the buttonfest that is the Behringer DDM4000. The existing demo unit has seen many corners of the planet (with a few scars picked up on the way) showing it's wares to Behringer customers hungry for what this 4 channel effect laden MIDI enabled beat has to offer.

Willkommen im Apple Store!
Posted by Gizmo on November 13, 2007

My quest for charities continues. My application to the Apple Store Deutschland has been approved and I now have the 4 big hitters in terms of sw_smilie.png visitors covered for Christmas Apple gear campaign. Now it would be really cool if you could all do what you can to spread this link.

I need you ALL to do is spread the word to friends, family, readers of your own websites and blogs - even ask your bosses to add the link to your company email signature and websites.

Please remember - anyone buying anything from the online Apple Store in the UK, Germany USA and Canada through the banners on the charity page will be helping to make a worthy cause better off this Christmas. And it doesn't cost a thing to do either.

Once again - thanks in advance.

CDJ-400 - To scratch or not to scratch
Posted by Gizmo on November 12, 2007

At BPM, Pioneer presented a stark contrast in new equipment. On one hand, the SVM-1000 looks at home on the bridge of the Enterprise and has a price tag and spec that will ensure that only an ultra-small section of the DJ community will be able to own one. On the other hand, the new CDJ-400 looks like being a player that, like the other CDJs before it, will become a standard. But there has been some debate across the DJ intarwebs about the platter and if is in fact any good. So being the responsible hack that I am, I figured that the only way to find out was to do an early morning assault on the Pioneer stand and set the record straight.

BPM Day 1
Posted by Gizmo on November 11, 2007
Pioneer BPM show

It's always sad to see something once so great totally disintegrate before your very eyes. From a DJ perspective, the previously awesome PLASA has seen its glory days and has started on a downward spiral into stuffy corporate trade show hell. But fear not for BPM has lived up to the hype and promise and based on this years dismal PLASA, established itself as the UK's premier DJ show after just one attempt.

From the BPM floor... my ears hurt
Posted by Gizmo on November 10, 2007
Jesus - this place is loud. And busy. And worth coming to. I'm keeping this very short so bullet points until later:

• The CDJ-400 feel very nice - better than any other small platter on the market and very scratchable. With everything else it has to offer, and coming in at £450, Pioneer have such a winner on their hands.

• Cortex have an HDC-500 - like a single deck rackmount 1U slot in unit. I have picture.

• I've seen a Technics mixer with a Pro X Fade 2 in it.

• The music is very very loud.

• It's very busy as well.

• HTFR are doing a lot of business. Some serious bargains to be had.

That'll do for now until later.

Wot no fader?
Posted by Gizmo on November 9, 2007
Bird DJ5 mixer

Dusting off the digital archives of sw_smilie.png, I posed the question about basic mixers and just how simple the core feature set of a mixer needed to be to satisfy the requirements of a DJ. Well you can just throw all that bollocks out of the window as this crossfader-free DJ mixer has surfaced via Engadget.

VCM-100 - spec and everything

Vestax VCM-100 MIDI Controller

Rather than me pointing and squirting my camera in the relative comfort of Vestax's secret chambers at trade shows, I now have official information on their next MIDI controller - the very sturdy VMC-100.

NI get festive and show off at BPM

native Instruments Christmas Traktor offer BPM show

BPM starts tomorrow. If you've not been round these parts for a while or perhaps it's just a blur of long words and pretty pictures, BPM looks like being everything that PLASA once was but no longer is for DJs. Most of the playaz will be there pimping their nextlevelness™ wares to the very much suspecting visitors. Big thanks to those who've bought advance cut price tickets from my affiliate link - I can now afford to eat while I'm down there rather than foraging for scraps round the back of the nearest motorway services. And this last minute bit of news about Native Instruments - they're at BPM and they've got a special offer on a Traktor/Scratch bundle as well.

Posted by Gizmo on November 8, 2007

Pioneer's CDJ-400 - yes it's real
Posted by Gizmo on November 7, 2007
Pioneer CDJ-400 CDJ 400 CD Deck MIDI

Seems to have been Pioneer's worst kept secret in a long time but it's finally here - the CDJ-400. Soon to seen at BPM on Saturday, this as predicted scratch wheeled deck with USB goes quite a few steps further in terms of function and wow factor, having included MIDI as standard, meaning that not only can it be used as a regular deck but also as a MIDI controller for Pioneer's own DJS software (I predicted this ages ago) but of course every other MIDIable software. Well I hope so anyway as Serato is the only one mentioned. Nice.

BPM - who's doing what
Posted by Gizmo on November 6, 2007

This weekend sees the maiden voyage of what could well be the UK's best DJ show in the world. That show is BPM and is stuffed to overflowing with names who have in recent times given shows a wide berth. But who are these companies and just what the ruddy hell are they doing at BPM?

Apple, skratchworx and Christmas charity
Posted by Gizmo on November 6, 2007

I've had an idea, but I need your help to pull it off. It's an audacious plan that if works properly will get a heap of cash for charity, and importantly costs you nothing to do. The basic idea is to spread the word to everyone you know by whatever means necessary about this page. In a nutshell - I'll give 50% of my commission to charity if you buy your Apple gear through my affiliate link.

SSL MIDI takeover starts right here
Posted by Gizmo on November 4, 2007
denon hc4500 Serato

Manufacturers may be mortal enemies in the marketplace, but the adoption of MIDI as a standard in the scene (if such a thing exists outside of RCAs and phono jacks) has got their products talking to each other whether they like it or not, and strange bedfellows are popping up every day. Numark's iCDX is mooted to work with Serato Scratch Live but now official support for Denon's new DN-HC4500 USB MIDI box has been announced.

DVS - "I invented it" says RZA
Posted by Gizmo on November 2, 2007

For you gear geeks (yes including me), this interview with Wu Tang's RZA courtesy of is pure gold. He's making the very bold but utterly convincing claim that he was basically behind the whole DVS revolution, that includes a guy in Switzerland, an Atari computer and a boatload of cash or something. Seems the whole history of Final Scratch, Serato and the DVS revolution just got a whole lot murkier.

Is that an MPC in your pocket or...
Posted by Gizmo on November 2, 2007
iphone music applications

Yes - I'm a shameless Mac evangelist. Yes - I crave the soon to be released in the UK iPhone like a crack addict for the next fix. But no - I won't be buying one. Why? Well I'm saving my kidneys for a Macbook Pro. And if I can't use it as a modem (which it can't) then it's useless to me. But while there's no doubt of the luverliness of the iPhone as... well a phone, there are a huge number of other uses cropping up, provided you're happy to hack your iPhone, risk bricking it and possibly rendering it largely no more use than a totally cool looking paperweight. Now the world of sampling and sequencing comes to the iPhone.

Battles - not just for scratchers
Posted by Gizmo on November 1, 2007
CKone Dj competition

For some, DJing choice choons and equisite mastery of the equipment to create a seemless aural blend that rocks the world of the punters on the dancefloor. For others however, it's much about kicking the arse of the other guy with hardcore DJ skills and walking away with a string of titles. Catering for the latter, ckone, Kiss and Galaxy in the UK are getting together to make a new DJ competition that caters for all styles and focusses on skills.
