Monthly Archive

Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.

DEMO: Victor Aime on the MixVibes U-Mix Control Pro
Posted by Gizmo on January 31, 2011

Seeing as it's demo day, I thought I'd share a timely clip with you. You'll have seen the recent coverage from NAMM 2011 of the new MixVibes U-Mix Control Pro hardware and iPad app. Well bugger me if MixVibes didn't break the record from first look to actual hardware in my hands. First, check out Victor Aime bust a short set on the hardware, and then I'll give you a handful of first impressions.

DEMO: Eskei83 and The Bridge
Posted by Gizmo on January 30, 2011

Despite the 2 years of hype, buildup and massive expectation from the masses, I don't think I'm surprising anyone when I say that the fabled Serato/Ableton collab project The Bridge has yet to set the DJ world on fire just yet. But when you see it being put to practical use with a quality DJ and a shedload of gear, you begin to see just how this could be an incredibly versatile setup. DJ Eskei83 is that DJ in that melting pot of tech. The results are in the video.

HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY HATTY!
Posted by Gizmo on January 26, 2011
_

One unsung member of the skratchworx family (literally) is L'il Miss Giz. She's popped up in reviews and news stories from time to time, offering such sage opinion as "that's pretty", "oooh lots of buttons" and "can I have that Daddy?". But today, please allow me to deviate from DJ stuff and indulge my personal life for a moment, because on this big day at skratchworx, we celebrate Hatty's transition from kidulthood into adulthood. Happy 18th birthday brat!

Battle of the video formats - you decide
Posted by Gizmo on January 26, 2011
_

As video is going to play a considerably bigger part in the future of this site, I need to start making decisions about where exactly to host it. You'll have noted that I've used a mixture of Vimeo and Youtube in the last post. But which works best for you? Or should I simply self host and get the extra traffic?

NAMM 2011 - Performance videos
Posted by Gizmo on January 25, 2011
_

Part of the fun of trade shows is watching really good DJs going for it on the supplied gear. And the team were around to capture a few of them, most of which appear to be performed on one Rane mixer or another. And to keep the hardcore happy, there's quite a bit of scratching too.

NAMM 2011 - Vestax VFX-1/ with Scratch Live demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 25, 2011

As NAMM started, Serato released v2.2 of Scratch Live, which was very much about improving the effects section. Not only that, it also saw Vestax's VFX-1 ITCH effects controller get assimilated into the SSL fold, and is now a fully fledged effects controller for Scratch Live. Putting simmering rivalry aside, Nick from Serato and our very own Philly joined forces to give the VFX-1 a little run out.

One thing notably missing from the NAMM coverage has ben photography. Not that the team didn't take any - I simply concentrated on getting video out to you quickly. NAMM 2011 - Ultimate Support Hyper-Station laptop stand
Posted by Gizmo on January 23, 2011

While wading through the veritable mountain of pictures fed back from NAMM (which are all up in my Flickr space), there was one set that caught my eye in particular. Although it is popping up around the usual outlets, it doesn't seem to be getting the upfront attention that the obviously more interesting DJ gear is getting. The Ultimate Support Hyper-Station laptop stand looks to take the best bits of all the existing stands and roll them out into one all new one.

NAMM 2011 - American Audio VMS4 Traktor and VMS2 overview
Posted by Gizmo on January 22, 2011

It's not every day that you get a bona fide VIP DJ working as a spokesman for a manufacturer. But American Audio decided that giving Edgar Bernal aka current US DMC champion Etronik a job would be a shrewd move. And here he is in full 1080p glory, giving us a very quick overview of the new VMS4 Traktor edition and the smaller VMS2 sibling.

As previously mentioned, the VMS4 Traktor edition is physically identical, but has a new paint job, that reflects the mapping for the special edition of Traktor. The VMS 2 is a 2 channel version of the original VMS4 - same stylings, but just less of it. Thankfully the 1080p video does show the aesthetics in glorious shiny detail.

NAMM 2011 - Gemini Firstmix Demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 21, 2011

Having salivated over serious scoops of nextlevelness at NAMM, it's funny to think that stuff that is most memorable for me often costs the least. The Gemini Firstmix is one such product, and is quite adorable in its simplicity and stylings. We thrust a camera into the face of Gemini's Dave Cabasso who was only too pleased to tell us about the $79 marvel.

NAMM 2011 - Numark iDJ Live demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 21, 2011

As you can imagine, and are witnessing for yourself, the skratchworx groundforce got a huge amount of media from this year's NAMM. So imagine my surprise when Chris Roman from Numark tweeted at me about a demo he did for us about the djay for iPad rocking Numark iDJ Live. An email later saw the lost footage uploaded to the server and processed double quick. So here it is - Chris Roman talking over a very busy and noisy crowd about their rather splendid looking iDJ Live.

NAMM 2011 - Pioneer DDJ Live Demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 20, 2011

Things don't always work out as you might expect. And plugging one expensive bit of gear into another with just a cable inbetween should yield a reasonable result - but not this time. Having seen many very similar demos of the new Pioneer DDJ controllers, it struck me that none of them recorded the actual output or showed hands on platter response. So I tasked the NAMM groundforce with snatching some clips of the DDJs in action.

NAMM 2011 - Smithson Martin Emulator
Posted by Gizmo on January 20, 2011

Touchscreen devices are all the rage (duh) and for some offers a pocket sized DJ setup to carry around to bust out when a party is just the right thing to do. But for a logistically superior DJ experience, they're a bit on the small side. So Smithson Martin decided to devise a way for DJs to have a more DJ sized setup, but still have all the controls at hand - and that way is The Emulator. The NAMM team stopped by the booth and grabbed a nice demo for you.

NAMM 2011 - Teenage Engineering OP-1 HD demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 20, 2011

Almost 2 years ago, Teenage Engineering impacted the synth scene (if such a thing exists) with their extremely prototype but also hugely promising OP-1. And after what seemed like a dogs age, with fears of it actually being vapourware, the OP-1 went up for pre-order last Friday - and immediately sold out. We got a demo, that left our normally stoic reporters ooohing and aaahing at its wonderfulness. And that's a full 1080p demo if you want a bigger picture.

NAMM 2011 - Korg KAOSS Quad effects box
Posted by Gizmo on January 18, 2011

It seems that skratchworx was the victim of an unfortunate inteweb glitch that saw our press materials snatched by the Yousendit pixies, never to be seen again. Never mind - having my ear to the ground like any good hack does, I picked up on some new Korg goodies. There's a couple that us DJ types are interested in, the first of which is the new leader of the KAOSS pack - the KAOSS Pad Quad (or Pod Quad as the webpage which does sound better), which not only adds more of a light show, but as the name suggests gives 4 effects banks to play with - and quite a bit more.

NAMM 2011 - Reloop Jockey 3 walkthrough
Posted by Gizmo on January 17, 2011

With every Tom, Dick and Harry knocking out 4 channel units like they're going out of fashion, we appear to have an extremely crowded new market in record time. NAMM has seen just about everyone clamber to make sure their own take on the current fad was seen, and Reloop are no different. They teased their Mission III just before NAMM, and this Jockey 3 is what it's all about, and it doesn't look half bad either.

The DDJ-T1 comes with a special version of Traktor and is 4 channels as opposed to the previously shown ITCH based S1, which is just 2. DJ Pulse runs us through the basics.

MixVibes have released the U-Mix Control Pro and U-Mix Remote app for iPad - and look just about identical in practice.

NAMM 2011 - Avid Torq 2 Demo
Posted by Gizmo on January 15, 2011

A real surprise for me has been the revitalised and relaunched Torq 2. To all intents and purposes, it had become a bit of an also ran, and was slowly being lapped in the race for DVS supremacy. But after posting the first NAMM piece, it seems to be getting nothing but love from current users and toe dippers too. Peter thrust a camera into M-Audio's face and demanded that they tell him what's up.

The NS6 lifts the style and features from the NS7 and NSFX and shoehorns a few bits and bats in as well. Chris Roman from Numark gives us a walkthrough.

Much to the annoyance of some readers, iPads are getting more coverage than ever on skratchworx. Well I'm sorry people, but Apple's latest must have is showing signs of becoming just as much of a fixture in DJ bags as laptops are. But right now, output is is achilles heel. Yes it has a headphone output, but there's no proper way to have real stereo master and cueing. But the Alesis Studiodock looks like filling this feature gap perfectly.

Sorry people, but this new Rane MP25 is not for you. A few years ago, M-Audio burst upon the DVS scene with their own (I guess) defunkt brand SyncroScience and their Torq package. It comprised of tied in hardware and a pretty unique take on what DVS software should be. It gains fans, but eventually fell by the wayside and to all intents forgotten about. But then Avid bought M-Audio and decided it was time for a shakeup. Development of Torq was taken over by an all new team (as well as losing key developer Chad carrier to NI). And now an all new Torq 2 is here. And you can play with it today.

When you look at products like the NS7 and NS6, you have to wonder why a mixer like this new iM9 makes it into the extensive Numark range. It's what is called a bread and butter product - the one that sells by the bucketload because it fulfils a mainstream need and puts food on the table, and at the same time helps to finance the extensive R&D needed for the aforementioned ubergoodies. So while not exactly setting the world on fire, the iM9 provides a solid set of tools for a huge number of cost conscious DJs, and is notable for having an iPod dock for playback and direct recording.

This is more like it. As I mentioned previously and have eluded to in the past, the next logical usage for iPads in DJing is as the actual brains i.e. running a MIDI controller into an iPad and running an app via MIDI. Well this is what it's all about - actual physical control of your MIDI apps and a physical connection too. iDJ Live is essentially ION's Discover DJ with an iPad stand and the necessary cabling, and is just waiting for suitable MIDI enabled iPad apps to come along and work.

Well now it's here, and it's a thing to behold. The pedigree of the NS7 is clear and is written all over this new NS6 unit. When thinking about the Traktor 50% off deal, you needed neither a degree in rocket science or brain surgery to work out that something was afoot - and indeed some has been for a while. The version of Traktor that comes with the Kontrol S4 pointed towards an all new version coming along - one that aimed to close the gap feature-wise with it's arch nemesis Serato Scratch Live. But as the above video hints at, it's not just software that is getting the update treatment. Let's see what we can deduce from this.

Pioneer DDJ-T1 Traktor controller DDJ-S1 Serato ITCH NAMM 2011

Pioneer's foray into the controller market has been long expected. It would have been commercial suicide for them to pin all their hopes on the CDJ range when the market has clearly signalled that controllers is where it's at - and 4 channel ones at that. The word was out, with numerous industry types telling me about them (hard to keep a real lid on things with 3 big companies involved), and while they were expected at BPM, the time wasn't quite right for them. But now it is, and Pioneer's virgin MIDI controller voyage has begun. But not with a single controller, but 2 different ones, specifically tailored to work with the industry leaders in the DJ software market. Say hello to the DDJ-T1 for Traktor and the DDJ-S1 for Serato ITCH.
